Davy and I have been taking walks in the woods.

Around here, it is a lovely deep woods, the Pacific NW rainforest: beautiful trails through tall trees and lush ferns, beard-ish mosses hanging from branches, wonderful and strange fungi all of a sudden nearly underfoot... I spotted one today that should have been growing on a log, but it was just emerging from the ground, and it had an ivy leaf growing above it, but the stem of the ivy had grown up through the edge of the fungus. Davy is so patient... He is learning what "Still!" means... as I... Sign in to see full entry.

Waking up...

in a comfy warm bed, and lap-top next to me--just a little indulgence that lets me check in on Blogit or email or weather report or whatever on a whim--and as I sit here doing that, Ninja the black cat leaps onto the bed from wherever he was lurking, and unlike a ninja, says hello and marches across the Land of Counterpane... encounters a small mound that makes a hostile sound: Violetta of the Velvet Paw frequently slides under the covers at night, and tucks herself in a warm place behind my... The robins on the windowsill

When I was a kid, from 1st grade to 5th, we lived in the upstairs apartment of an old carriage house at the edge of a Long Island estate. Oh, how I'd love to have such a place now! But this isn't about the charms of that old home. This is about the robins. From the window of our bathroom at the end of the house, we looked towards the neighbors who occupied another converted carriage house. Our landlady lived there with her husband who was a mysterious fellow who rarely spoke, and was supposed to... Sign in to see full entry.

Mood: Pleased and Perplexed

In December or January, I have an opportunity to do a show at a little cafe downtown. There is plenty of wall space, and I can pretty much put up what I like. The clientele is largely student/academic/whole-foods eating folks. This is the community of The Evergreen State College, if that tells you anything. Old hippies of the 60s know that what kids nowadays call hippies are not the way we were... but that's how my kids have always described the TESC community. There have been shows in this... I decided on a new scanner...

CANON CS8800F COLOR SCANN From here on I will be making my own prints! Up to 8x10, anyway! And I will be able to go back into my archives of negatives and slides, and print those, too! It is better than the $400 scanner: comes with Photoshop Elements and other software. No more going through the hassle of ordering prints online, paying for shipping, waiting for delivery--then finding them not quite the thing. It will hook into the system and printer I already have, which is a pretty good one,... Sign in to see full entry.

Technical questions: Looking at scanner/printers...

I need excellent reproduction of photos, of course... accurate color and good crisp detail... and the capacity to print from negatives and slides. Looking at an hp that does all that... for around $400. any other suggestions, anyone? Sign in to see full entry.

The Best Hot'n'Sour Soup in America!

If you love a good soup that'll cure anything that ails ya, it's here in Olympia, Washington at a nice bright little restaurant called ' Bamboo.' (The rest of their menu is excellent, too!) I have tried hot'n'sour soup cross country, and all over town, and I have never found any anywhere that is even close in deliciousness and wealth of ingredients! While we're here, I should mention a great little breakfast/lunch place in Colorado Springs: The Pike Grill is on Garden of the Gods Way near the... Sign in to see full entry.
