StarFest, Denver!

We spent this weekend--I, part of it and Charlie all of it--at this annual convention of sci-fi/fantasy enthusiasts. There are always some notables of varying degrees of notability, who turn up to thrill their fans or remind former fans that they aren't dead yet. This year, David Prowse was there: the British actor who was inside the Darth Vader suit voiced by James Earl Jones. Dee Wallace was there: the actress who played the harried mother in ET. John Noble was there, who played Denethor, the... Sign in to see full entry.

This looks like my last month for a while.

This is the time of year I consider what I pay out for what I bring in, financially. I spend two to three times here what comes back, and as the economy has been taking great bites out of the family income over the past year, and more to come, I can't justify it to the family Accountant. I do have something in the works, that might make enough of a difference, though probably not fast enough. (Last night, my son and I spent about 5 hour designing a brochure for EditWorks which we will print,... Sign in to see full entry.

Speaking of Writing and Publishing

My intent is to attract some clients who want a writing coach. Last night, a local bookstore hosted what was a small but comfortable gathering of writers who have not yet been published, but would like to be. One was a middle-aged man, the husband of the bookstore owner. The others were young, and still figuring out why they write, let alone what to write or how to write it. For an hour and a half, we talked about it. This talk was the lead-up to a series of writer's workshops in which the... Sign in to see full entry.

I was cruising...

...through the earliest pages of this blog, today, back before all the photos were links to flickr, and I posted many shots of Young Davy, with his cheery puppy looks, and flowers, and does anyone remember Inchland...? Inchland was the opening of this blog, on the very earliest page, and Kabu in particular, I believe, would enjoy a visit there. We have invested so many of our hours and so much of our imagination and creativity--even, sometimes rising to eloquence! Now and then I go back and back... Sign in to see full entry.

And now... It's snowing. Sideways.

The snow will be pretty on the new leaves and little flowers... the lilac bush beginning to show green... I wonder how those pasque flowers are doing up in Palmer Park? The forecast is for 3-4 inches today, maybe another 3 overnight... and temps tomorrow around 60F. Welcome to Colorado Springs. Sign in to see full entry.

Today it was spring

It was near 80F in Colorado Springs, and we were in Palmer Park soaking in the sunshine. Green leaves have begun to appear, and bright green blades are pushing up through the hummocks of old dead grass. And the winter-bleak ground under the pines has these lovely little flowers bursting into bloom just in time for Easter--for they are pasque flowers, and this is their season. http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ Sign in to see full entry.

For a while, we feared bugs in the siding.

But the bird that comes hammering on that one corner of the house every morning is not, after all, a woodpecker. It is a Northern Flicker, hammering on something resonant to announce her interest and availability to potential mates. These birds typically find anything to hammer on that will produce a loud, carrying sound. They favor metal stovepipes. We're fortunate not to have one of those. But someone in the neighborhood, does. This morning, I hear in the distance, even as our visitor pounds... Sign in to see full entry.

More cats, more dogs...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/msbell/ This link is not to my photos, but to my daughter's, who volunteers at the Wellington SPCA where she helps train the dogs to improve their chances of finding real homes, and also takes their pictures. And the cats', too. Her photostream has other stuff in it, too, of places she travels to. Lucky kid! Sign in to see full entry.

Kabu likes cats...

And here are a couple for her enoyment... and yours, too! http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ PS Okay, you will have to follow the photostream back a bit, to the cats, as I am now adding a few shots from my son's LARP--live action role-playing game. Or you can seek out the set of photos under the heading 'cats' where there are lots more cats anyhow. Sign in to see full entry.

TAPS writes about an apartment building fire

and that reminded me of a story my son told me about some college kids who witnessed a fire. They were in their own back yard having a barbecue when they heard the sirens coming down the street, and stopping right there, in front of their house--so they ran around to the front yard, and it was the neighbors' house fully ablaze. They stood back and watched as it burned--fire is fascinating! And they felt terrible for the neighbors, naturally. But the neighbors were glaring back at them with... Sign in to see full entry.
