Another warm Sunday...

Heat enervates me, which isn't what it sounds like. I don't feel much like doing much, especially thinking or writing. But then... even on dull days, something interesting comes up, and inspires again. Today, it is seeing that the morning glory sprouts have begun to send out tendrils, reaching for things to climb. In a week or two, the first blossoms might be opening: deep blue ones, and some bright red ones! The nasturtium leaves are also leaning towards the sunlight, and one of these days will... It was baba ghanouj...

If anyone knows what it should be called now, I'd love to hear! Baba ghanouj is a popular Mediterranean (several different nationalities make a version of it) dip made with a severely roasted eggplant, even burnt, to get a nice smokey flavor in it. The eggplant goop is mixed with tahini, stuff like peanut butter but made of sesame seeds. I often use hummus, though, which is chickpeas mashed to creaminess and mixed with tahini. I get the garlic flavored kind as garlic is also essential to the... Sign in to see full entry.

Misty morning

Charlie had a bit of theater-work to do this morning: shifting lumber around the summer Shakespeare set over at Rock Ledge Ranch, just a few paces from Garden of the Gods, so after dropping him off, I drove the loop among the wonderful sandstone features. Of course, I think of TAPS when I go there, knowing I am moving in her footsteps, and I think of my blogit friends who have perhaps not been there yet. On this morning of light mist and mostly cloudy, I regretted that I didn't take a camera... Sign in to see full entry.

Update: The House Project

The House renovation continues... With the floors essentially done, the roof is next. It started as a hinged A-frame, the 'shingles' printed on paper. This will be covered over with little squares and rectangles of black posterboard, then sprayed over with a dull lustre fixative so it will not be damaged by wet, like a sudden rainstorm or a spilled beverage. But before these 'slates' can be laid down, the jigsaw will come into play: the play-side of the roof will be cut open to allow access to... Sign in to see full entry.

Sleeping through fireworks

The Renaissance Festival opened at 10am, though I was there from 8:30, having ridden with Charlie and two other employees. There were quite a few members of the public arriving early, too, because that is the way to get a parking spot near the front gate. There are a few trees, so some shade near the front gate, but nothing much to sit on but the ground. It would be friendly of the Ren Fest owner to provide some seating for Those Who Wait, but the owner is not noted for thinking that way. I give... Sign in to see full entry.

Waiting for the ride...

This morning, bright and sunny as it is, I am riding with Charlie's ride to the Renaissance Festival where most likely I will spend the entire day and come home utterly exhausted and as glad of a sit-down in a comfy chair as I have ever been! The camera is getting its last little electical bits stuffed into the battery, and I have a pouch full of scribery gear: pens, inks (black and brown) and various-sized bits of what I fondly call my own artificial 'real parchment.' It may be I can write up a... Sign in to see full entry.

Facebook isn't what it used to be.

https://screen.yahoo.com/betty-white-monologue-facebook-000000994.html Betty White's assessment of Facebook, five years ago, was pretty much in keeping with mine, when I had been on there for a time, then moth-balled my account. It was silly, essentially pointless activities, like games and quizzes, and a lot of personal stuff that was like what you learn of people when they sit at a table near yours in a restaurant, and by the time you leave, you know far more about their lives than you could... New house, new squirrel!

The floors are nearly done in the little house, and photos are up in the usual place. Yesterday, after a long lack of squirrels in the neighborhood, this little one turned up. It has a sort of bent tail, and the ears are the worse for wear, and it's shy, but bold enough to come requesting peanuts on the back porch, and once again, I am pleased to oblige, and to take a few pictures, too. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/og5zFn Sign in to see full entry.

Morning Gardening

This is my third garden season in this house. Previous attempts to grow vines on the deck, for shade and color, and for vegies--sugar snap peas and red runner beans--were sad failures: winds here are punishing and dry, and nothing survived but a few morning glories which were quite lovely while they lasted. This year, though, morning glories, nasturtiums and zinnias have all sprouted strongly, and there are even a few sprouts of Japanese Lantern plants poking into sight. In the cool of the... Progress on the house continues... Floors!

Last night I was working in the garage, laying wood floors in the little house. Overhead, lightning was cracking and banging, the kind of weather some people and just about all animals dislike with great alarms and anxieties. Even people who like thunderstorms--I'm one of them--glanced up to say, "Is this becoming a thing...? Should I be worried?" But I felt safe enough down in the garage with two ceilings overhead, and just kept at the task at hand. For many year, ever since I first saw coffee... Sign in to see full entry.
