Cool, sweet morning, and Charlie found a ride to the Ren Fest so I am sitting here still in my nightclothes, and it's nearly 9am! We went to a show last night, one that he made some props for, including some fake food to go on a dinner table then get tossed in the trash. He used a salt dough, shaped into little carrots, a couple of chicken breasts (boneless), and mashed potatoes with gravy. They dried in the oven, then he painted them. The carrots are vivid! The chicken looks tasty. The mashed... Sign in to see full entry.

Another early morning...
Waking with the birds is not such a bad thing. I love the dawn chorus which begins around 4:30 and was in full chorale by the time I woke today just before 6am. The parakeets join in later but are particularly vocal in the early morning. AbbeyCat wanders around the house as she will, and her yowls can get quite strident as if she has forgotten that she isn't alone and isn't lost: As soon as I call back, she quiets her tone and comes trotting in to wherever I am. The person at the rescue place... Sign in to see full entry.

Recipe: Pickled Watermelon Rind
It has been ages since I found pickled watermelon rind in stores, but this recipe turned up the other day, and sometime this summer I will have to give it a try. Anyone else also like this tasty garnish for chicken or turkey? I used to slice it thin to put on sandwiches, too. Ingredients: • 4 1/2 pounds watermelon rind (enough to make 9 cups) • 6 cups water • 1/3 cup pickling salt • 3 1/2 cups sugar • 1 1/2 cups white vinegar • 1 1/2 cups water • 15 inches cinnamon sticks • 2 teaspoons whole... Home again
Not me... Abby Cat. She has settled in, eating and drinking well, and owning the house as cats do. She is putting on some weight, and her fur is already much better from good food, combing, and constantly rubbing against everyone and every thing. The Pet Project person returned my call after a couple of days and expressed her delight that I'd adopted Abby, but could tell me little about her history. She thinks Abby was a stray, but was not her first stop in the chain of rescuing. Abby calls... Sign in to see full entry.

Thursday...
Sitting home now after being dismissed along with the other 50 potential jurors, I've brushed Abby down, and cuddled and enjoyed her booshing me under the chin suddenly while I was drinking my iced coffee. She has turned her hunter's gaze on Crumpet and Alice, who ignore her. And she has stood up to get a look at the parakeets, and they don't seem to mind her as much as they are wary of my incursions on their living space. The air outside is hot and grey. We come by the heat honestly: it is... Sign in to see full entry.
Cat
Her name is Abby, she is a dark tortoise-shell color, and has long fur that is already growing softer to the touch now she is out of the rescue kennels and has furniture and pants and carpetting to rub against. She is a bit skinny but has a clean health report and teeth. Bloodwork, dental work, and shots are up to date. I suspect there is a bit of the Norwegian Forest Cat in her, with her fine fur and bits of fluff between what's left of her toes. Yes, someone had her declawe d some long time... Wednesday and Cats
Wednesday already! I have a lunch date with a friend today. She's getting wed next month, and they are going to Sydney for their honeymoon--I am envious! I've spent a total of almost a week there, in two short trips, both times down by the harbor. That's where the huge and amazing Royal Botanic Gardens are, where I spent hours and hours again! There are photos somewhere... Yesterday turned into a cat-seeking day. There are two that have my eye, both adoptees available through a pet store. One is... Sign in to see full entry.

The news has gone public!
For those of you who didn't get my big fat hints, The News is that my daughter in England is 14 weeks pregnant. This is the one that was never going to have kids, didn't want, no, not a bit! Well, at 36, she decided she did want after all. Today she announced it to the world in general, on Facebook. Mid December is the due date. Today is also the opening day of the 2016 Colorado Renaissance Festival. I'll drive Charlie up to Larkspur, about 30 miles north, but probably won't stay as the day will... Sign in to see full entry.

Good morning!
It has been a busy time, a time of brain-weariness and social inwardness... all things that seem to go hand in hand. Today, bright and early after a good night's sleep (if you don't count persistant leg cramps that woke me twice) I have spend a pleasant interlude here in Blogitland not only reading--which I often do--but even commenting--which I do less these days. It's like having morning coffee with a group of friends around the table, catching up, telling the stories of naked drivers and new... Sign in to see full entry.

New bird visitor
Since putting out the thistle seed feeder, a net tube that the birds land on to pull the little black seeds through the mesh, I have had a pretty little kind of finch showing up regularly. It is a black-backed form of the lesser goldfinch. It's a cheery little thing, and a delight to the eyes! Even in today's gusty winds and the onset of 'severe thunderstorm,' which was less severe here than the southern end of town, these little finches were busy until the actual rain started. I've heard that... Sign in to see full entry.
