Aftermath

Yesterday's trip to the Morbid Curiosities Carnival went pretty smoothly--the drive, more than we expected as the Colorado Renaissance Festival opened this weekend, and we meant to leave an hour earlier than we did, because the traffic is predictably terrible up the road near Larkspur where the Ren Fest lives. It is also right in the middle of roadwork that has slowed the highway traffic, and in a place where there are only two lanes. But we did pass through that bottleneck a pause, apparently... Play it again...

Here we are nearly ready to rush off to the one-day-only Morbid Curiosities Fair in Denver. Ideal for Charlie's post-apocalyptic visions and art, and I will also be bringing my tray of planets and the needle-felting kit to keep me busy. See you after! Sign in to see full entry.

One more time...

Mama Dove is sitting on at least one egg. Charlie got a photo several days ago when she was out and about. Usually they lay a pair of eggs, and she might have added the second after his visit. I am not bothering her, though I do go out on the deck to water the plants, and always say a soft 'hello.' I have been going through the items Julie sent me home with, and a certain painting that used to hang over the buffet in the old house when I was between 5 and 10 turns out not to be the one in the... Glorious Old Ladies!

Here it is Wednesday already... Sun is shining, and thunderstorms are not in the forecast, and temps are expected to be in the 70s and 80s for the next two weeks. So... Summer follows hard on the icy heels of Winter. We hardly saw Spring at all. Today starts with cleaning the fish tank. I have done the filter and scoured the green slime off the glass as far as I can. It takes two, however, to siphon out 2/3 of the green water. I am hoping it will reach as far as the potted plants out on the back... Sign in to see full entry.

...And back from the mountains...

Afternoon, overnight in Estes Park, and home again by 1pm Saturday. My sister is preparing to move down to senior housing in Boulder in January, and she has so much stuff to pack and to dispose of... Museum quality art and artifacts, many, many books, a number of well-grown houseplants... and the house. It's a lovely bespoke-built house, quite unique, on 2.5 acres of tundra-like ground. It isn't above tree line, but there are no trees on it, so the views are open and there is very little danger... Sign in to see full entry.

Off to the mountains...

In a little while I will be heading out of the Springs and up to Estes Park where my sister lives. We don't see each other often enough! It is a little less springtime up there than down here, but it will feel like just another day of erratic Colorado weather. The route goes through some lovely geology, and forests ranging from the lower-elevation pines up through the aspens, all the way to subalpine firs, one of my favorite trees. It is a great break from down here surrounded by city, even a... Sign in to see full entry.

Re: Wednesday--clouds and sunshine and maybe storms

Two of the doves are back on the nest this morning--one parent, one youngster, I think. I wonder what they think of the changes made in their little domestic world! Today I will plant the carrot seeds and the pink lamia ground cover. The landlord is gonna love that stuff! It spreads wildly, and if he mows it down every now and then to the edgeline he likes, it won't hurt the garden. It is going under the lilacs where I have trimmed out the lowest branches. After struggling with the memory foam... Sign in to see full entry.

Love that rain!

Every day we get nice drenching rains is a day I don't have to water the garden! This is another of those days. It also keeps the temps down--today, below the forecast 80s. I hear India is baking under temperatures as high as 122F. And my daughter's mother-in-law is getting the extreme heat of a Cypriot summer already. I like this better. Today we prepped the big pot for carrots. They are the short, stubby, very sweet kind. And I draped the screening (for screen door replacement) over the rail... Sign in to see full entry.

Joys of Spring!

Oh, the aches of gardening! I spent maybe half an hour bending down to persuade the quack grass and its long running roots out of the garden yesterday, and wake to some whinging muscles in my bending-over portions... legs and lower back which, in reality, probably benefit from the exercise. At the moment, they benefit from a sitting-down time while the tylenol kicks in. No more dovelings on the deck since yesterday afternoon. They won't be far off--probably in the maple tree. I shook the seed... Sign in to see full entry.

Garden Day

Garden day today, far more exercise than I usually let myself in for! Tearing out quack grass from the back yard garden boxes... The do have long runner roots, those quacks! Then, pruning the lilac shrubberies before the landlord hacks them all to the ground completely, which he has threatened to do. I mean to attempt to persuade him otherwise. Now passage is clear from the bottom of the stairs out to the yard, and from the yard to the meter on the side of the house. If he takes them out... Sign in to see full entry.
