doveling update

The first youngster flew out of the nest, and made the boldest first-flight I've observed yet: all the way out to the big blue spruce! Usually, the first one flutters around the deck area for a day or two before attempting such a flight. This one went from nest to hanging chair to one of the plants hanging on the deck railing, and then out to the spruce. It's perhaps a 30-ft distance--as the dove flies. Cleared the air last night...

After several days of smoke-haze obscuring the mountains and filtering the sunlight, thunderstorms and quiet rains cleaned the air overnight, and today the mountains are visible through considerably less haze. The rain we had here was not of the rumble-bangers we saw in the distance, though the lightning visible from the back porch was phenomenal! There were flashes to the south and southwest mostly, and much horizontal lightning striking across a 35 degree sideways arc of the sky, from Pike's... Sign in to see full entry.
