Just as there is prewiring in a human being for faith, there is also prewiring for forming cliques and even needing cliques to be assured of what matters, what is true or false, who is friend or foe, and what to do about either one... And, as you say, we are not all prewired to the same extent. Or some of us are wired to rewire ourselves. Or life does that-- a kind of psychic neuropathy that cuts the connections or numbs us to their effects. For good or ill--always a matter of perspective--we... Sign in to see full entry.
LATE SUMMER AFTERNOON Heavy as hot wet flannel, every breath... I hate to sit or move in this August afternoon. Sticky-damp, clothes cling, a drag against ambition. Birds, lethargic, sing only if they must, fly ghostlike if at all. Cicadas ratchet on and on-- maddeningly constant, and mosquitos whine or strike unheard, the devils! Roses overblown and bright, relishing this tropic season, exude aromas heavy and too sweet. I languish, scowling, discontent and longing for the night-- for sleeping... Sign in to see full entry.
A lot of people in Singapore have live-in maids. It is an essential element of the local economy, providing employment for young women seeking an escape from poverty and the rural areas of South East Asia, the Philippines, etc. It seems there has been a trend lately toward maid-abuse that is so prevalent that there are regular reports on it in the news. Maids are beaten, they are locked in closets for days at a time, they are bitten... This is what I hear from my daughter, who has just moved... Sign in to see full entry.
I wrote this a while back, and things posted in the past day or two, particularly in Julia's blog about secrets, http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/Quirkyalone1026/ brought it back to mind. Without the context of that law of metaphysics that says we attract to us what we think of, this one doesn't make so much sense. But with that understanding, I think it works. THE GHOST How often does a dream call you back out of your waking life? And yet-- you called-- I came: Here I am. What do you want... Sign in to see full entry.
Baskhar wrote a blog today, a lovely, lyrical piece on intelligence... http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/Bhaskar.ing/ He got me thinking... Intellect alone is not intelligence, any more than analysis is understanding. Intellect is a tool, a process: intelligence is fundamental ability. The capacity to use intellect is intelligence. Intellectualizing is the ability to reduce reality to linear, rational, conscious terms. Intelligence is the capacity to be aware, and to know anything... to... Sign in to see full entry.
Just as in discussions about God and religion, any discussion about morality has to start by defining the terms. Morality is a universal concept, but cultural in its application, its interpretaton: it is a consensual matter, in any society, what is moral, what is good, what is bad, even what is evil. These are a few of my thoughts on the topic: Is there absolute morality? I think there are some universally agreed morals, but fewer than one might think. All mine relate to the non-infringement of... Sign in to see full entry.

Okay, who started this...? Depends on who you ask... There are as many stories of Creation as there are human cultures. Many of these stories are linked historically, recognizably sharing original sources, so that several cultures actually share a single concept of Creation. And some cultures have more than one-- Tibet, for example, has various versions of the origins of the world and of Mankind, though we here in the relatively flat lands think of it as being a single culture. Most of us in the... Sign in to see full entry.
