Whose There?

I had settled down to wait for a pack of wolves I had seen come through a meadow forty to fifty yards away when I heard a noise coming from my right. I turned slowly and saw this young (maybe two years old?) deer checking on me. The wolf pack didn't show up that day, but I did get a number of shots... Sign in to see full entry.

Northern Harrier in Flight

This is a Northern Harrier, a medium-sized hawk that measures about 18" tall. These are native to Canada and the northern tiers of the US. The day I caught it in flight, he was like Elmer Fudd of Bugs Bunny fame... he was "wabbit hunting!" Sign in to see full entry.

Ice Island

The shores of Lake Superior are dotted with little slag islands where the shore has slowly eroded over the millennia. This one is about 100 feet into the lake but has managed to keep a small tree growing on it. Sign in to see full entry.

Sunset on Big Mud Lake

This lake was only about five miles from our home in Newberry. It was 10 above when I took this photo, but it dropped down to five below by dawn the next morning. Very cold but intensely beautiful. Sign in to see full entry.

A Bear In The Fall

I was about fifty yards (~150 feet) from this young man when I first saw him. He was raiding a gut pile left behind from a gutted deer shot by a hunter. I could hear another bear talking to him, and that is why he is looking across the meadow. As is often the case, I had seen this bear in my travels... Sign in to see full entry.
