This lake was only about five miles from our home in Newberry. It was 10 above when I took this photo, but it dropped down to five below by dawn the next morning. Very cold but intensely beautiful. Sign in to see full entry.

I was about fifty yards (~150 feet) from this young man when I first saw him. He was raiding a gut pile left behind from a gutted deer shot by a hunter. I could hear another bear talking to him, and that is why he is looking across the meadow. As is often the case, I had seen this bear in my travels... Sign in to see full entry.

I caught this shot on a frigid day in March a few years ago. It might have been cold, but the eagle couple was busy assembling a nest for the little ones they would have in early May. This is the female. Her feathers have lighter bands at the end of her feathers, while the males do not. Sign in to see full entry.

The eagle on the left is a "teenager," a bird about three or four. The bird on the right is an adult, probably ten to twelve. They get the famous white head at age five, but sometimes earlier and sometimes later. I got so I recognized certain birds by their habits and actions. This bird was probably...
