The rattle of the cannonball, the rustle of the carrier bag.

I'm sitting at the computer searching for inspiration. My wife is three feet away from me searching for embroidery silks. I don't know why she decided to store them three feet from my left ear, or why she had to use a supermarket carrier bag to store them in. All I know is that the rustle of a... Roses from Kenya

When I was shopping this morning I bought roses for my wife. We try to have flowers in the house at all times, though it's obviously cheaper during the rest of the year when I can grow my own. It would be cheaper in winter if she'd let me browse round the local cemetery but women can be funny about... Sign in to see full entry.

Recycling - the temptation just to dump

My parents always give their bottles a good wash in hot water to get the labels and glue off before they recycle them. I'm not sure about the economics of it but I suspect a lot of the energy saved by recycling is lost in the amount of hot water used. It isn't just them, I know other people who do... More on cameras, and cheap TV

It's the modern trend. Got a problem, stick a camera up to take pictures of it. The problem isn't solved but you do get the raw material for a cheap TV show. Ever since we got the first US shows with video footage of police chases we have been snowed under. We have programmes of police chases and... Sign in to see full entry.

Would you?

In Lincolnshire today we saw the disgraceful/delightful (delete as applicable) sight of vandalised speed cameras. As mentioned in my journal, I struggled to keep a straight face when telling the kids that this was a bad thing. According to a news report last month police in Lincolnshire are... I'm throwing away my cookery books

Despite the rise in the popularity of celebrity chefs I've decide to take a stand. We're fighting against a rising tide of detritus in this house at the best of times and I've been looking at things I wouldn't miss. Including the ones that have been in store since I moved to this house eighteen... Sign in to see full entry.

Why can't spell checkers check spelling? And a bit about fascism.

This is a post on all spell checkers, not just the version used by Blogit, though some of the specific examples will come from here. I'm not going to go through the old thing about cheque/check, chequers/checkers and colour/color, though it would be nice if you could get spell checkers that allowed... Sign in to see full entry.

Health warnings

We have health warnings on cigarette packets and drink adverts. I have even noticed this Christmas that Nintendo Game Boys switch on with a screen that tells the user to read the health and safety warnings contained in the manual. So why do we allow other things to be sold without health warnings?... Sign in to see full entry.

Degrees of stupidity

Today I went on the sport discussion board I mentioned in the first post of this blog. The bully is still there. And he is still at it. I'm glad I discovered blogging, much nicer people. He is still trying to prove his intellectual prowess. This time he used the comment "Don't you ever sleep?" from... Sign in to see full entry.

Why does this always surprise me?

We went to Newark today, it's only about forty minutes away and we took the country route so it was quite restful. The truth is that we haven't been out much over the holiday and doing anything was better than doing nothing. When I was in my antique dealer phase I went to Newark every week to visit...
