When the Masons build, they really build!

Husband is off to Portland for a fencing tournament this weekend--thinking I might go along, and head out to the coast, see if the sea lions are still basking on the Astoria piers... Can anyone tell me what this petty little blossoming tree is?

They are a distinctly purpler pink than the cherry blossoms, and quite a different shaped flower, too. They are blooming all around Maryland, and I saw a lot of them in New York, as well. When I left home, there was a 2-inch blanket of snow on the world... But though it is a bit chilly and moist, spring has definitely come to Maryland!
