Getting caught up...

More photos are up on flickr, though not yet the ones for the two just-previous posts in this blog. These are the ruins of Sawley Abbey and some more lanes and trees. If I could take every shot I want, and show you all the ones I've missed, there would still be wonderful things for you to see for... Sign in to see full entry.

Ambleside and the Drunken Duck

Today we drove over to the Lake District in Cumbria. We didn't go hiking, the weather was threatening rain--though it never came--so we visited the cottage of Beatrix Potter (photos only in the gardens, but what gardens!) then had lunch at a pub called The Drunken Duck where I ate the best corned... Along the Withywindle

We visited the Brockholes (brockles) Nature Reserve near Preston, if you want to find it on a map. It's right up against a portion of the Ribble Way, the footpath that follows the River Ribble for quite a long way. TAPS will love the trails and arches... For our Kabu, there are Denizens among the... Sign in to see full entry.

In the Peaks District

We walked around lakes today, and among trees, through hummocky boggy places and under grey stone cliffs: Dove Stones Reservoir in the Peaks District National Park. There will be pictures, but after that five mile walk, I am going to soak in a hot bath, and go to bed. Sign in to see full entry.

JRR Tolkien did a lot of his writing at Stonyhurst College. It's a grand old structure with turrets capped with copper, now verdigris green, that can be seen from the front yard here. We drove by yesterday. School's in session now, so visitors are not welcome on the grounds, but I did get a few... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunshine breaking out...

Here is another morning that began with rain and heavy clouds, and now, 10am-ish, wind sails the clouds along and sunshine breaks through! Distant landscapes brighten and darken intermittantly as the clouds sail by over the Ribble Valley. Yesterday we went to Clitheroe and after visiting some yarn... Sign in to see full entry.

In the Yorkshire Wolds

This is possibly the best shot of the Yorkshire Wolds. Wolds are low hills over high ground. According to the wiki experts, the word derives from 'wald' which was Saxon for 'trees' or 'woods' as these hills once were forested. The place name remained after the trees were all gone. There are also a... Sign in to see full entry.

Birds, Animal sanctuary, and more churches

I meant to load the photos of York, and discovered a longer queue, from the little blue tits in the front yard feeding station, through our visit to the animal sanctuary (where Marika will be getting in the next few days, a hedgehog to foster), and the pause by a convent church along that road...... The old English oak

Today was a drive towards Southport and West Lancashire to visit an animal sanctuary that was having an open house day. I finally was able to get some trees in my sights. The trees have a wonderful silhouette against the sky this time of year, some still nearly bare-branched, some beginning to leaf... Sign in to see full entry.

Grey and drizzly...

Another rainy day, but hey, it's still England out there, and this is how they pay for the lush greens and gorgeous gardens! We have tentative plans to visit gardens when the sun comes out, and at least one of the "stately homes" in the area. Browseholme (pronounced 'bru-some') Hall is hosting a...
