Lollypops and Roses

I want the world to become a green meadow where children can chase butterflies and sip water from a sparkling clean stream where mothers are rational and sweet and fathers are there for the good times solid and true, steadfast. I want people to talk to each other about peace, about making this... Sign in to see full entry.

Waiting at Walgreen's

When I got there I was first in line behind this guy who was picking up some serious meds for 'Caroline.' He was uninformed about her insurance, she hadn't mentioned she'd owe a co-pay and hadn't sent money along. He didn't know who the doctor was, could not confirm that Caroline had seen said... The Boys

Or, I should say my boys, called yesterday. I'd been outside most of the morning, working in the yard and cleaning the garage. Tossed some more stuff I've been meaning to get rid of - recycled some plastic jars and bits that might have become art projects. Joe called while I came in for a potty... Sign in to see full entry.

Meat Loaf: It's not just for breakfast any more.

In case you don't know what TVP is - it's Textured Vegetable Protein: aka soy. Some time in the '70s I took to stretching my hamburger by adding reconstituted TVP to the mix. I tried to do the food prep while the boys were out playing ball and the others were glued to the TV, because whenever they... Sign in to see full entry.

Cowboy Suede...

Can you imagine what color a paint labeled Cowboy Suede would be? If you guessed some shade of brown, you'd be right. Mid-range brown with an orange tint. The color of really old door frames and baseboards. I've been using an artist brush to cover small slurps and brush marks that got on the edges... Sign in to see full entry.

The Piano Man

The first Tuesday I worked at the Community Center, I noticed at some point someone had turned on the sound system to play a tape of piano music. These were the old standards, big band tunes from pre-rock and roll. It was an unusual tape, just a lone piano, no rhythm section - but it formed a nice... Sign in to see full entry.

Local Talent as "reality tv" ?

Many a college town or mid-sized city in the U.S. has a theatre group. They produce old standards by genius playwrights of the past and put together original productions of work by local authors. Volunteers paint the scenery, set the lighting, sell the tickets. Local talent, performing arts majors,... A change in the weather...

Mama used to sing an old blues song. She'd belt it out in the kitchen when she thought we kids were still asleep. "There'll be a change in the weather, a change in the sea, from now on there'll be a change in me. My walk will be different, my talk and my name. Nothing about me's gonna be the same.... On Second Thought

I wrote a blog at six-ish about my bro- and sis-in-law, who came as guests to son Joe's barbecue yesterday. He'd planned it for outdoors, but it was nearly a hundred degrees, and the heat would be brutal on them. So he cooked early, kept the pork steaks and burgers warm in the crockpot, and served... Too Darn Hot!

Even at six in the morning, before the sun is up, it's 80 degrees and muggy. I was up around 2:30 and stepped out the back door for a second to see if any remnants of an earlier thunderstorm were still around. There wasn't a drop of rain, just dry lightning that jumped among the clouds, like the... Sign in to see full entry.
