Every Thursday there's a class on writing your own story at the Main Street Center. There are several who show up now and then and a couple who make it every week to write and talk about putting together a memoir. Most of us are grandparents who want to leave the family story behind for the kids who... Sign in to see full entry.

Once Upon a Time
That's my favorite opening line in a story. It's a sign the story's going to be set long ago, that there's going to be no clear and present danger. And the story's almost guaranteed to end with "and they all lived happily ever after." Some cliches are very comforting. There may be supernatural dark... Sign in to see full entry.

The Girls at Lowe's
I've been to Lowe's every other day, sometimes twice, lately. Looking at the gardening displays, picking up birdseed, paint color samples, etc. I ordered the wardrobe and then it was delivered. One day it was cold and I wore one of my crocheted hats. A girl at the checkout counter said she crochets,... Sign in to see full entry.

Election Day at the Center
Tuesdays are my days at the Main Street Center, and I made it a point to be there a bit early with a smile on my face and get a head start on whatever. The past two weeks I'd been busy on Blogit and lost track of time, arrived late and discombobbled. Turned out the Center was a polling place, the... Sign in to see full entry.

Sorting and organizing... and painting
After I got the one wall painted I ran out of steam, and let the other three walls wait. Sunday they forecast two inches of new snow, sudden drop in temp, gusty winds. I'd skipped my shift two weeks ago because the DOT told us to stay off the roads, so I "had" to be there this time. For some reason,... Sign in to see full entry.

Small World
Nephew Larry lives in Oregon, retired a couple years ago and spends time in cyberspace, sends me historic photos, jokes, news of the weird. We've been buds since he was eight and I was fifteen and his occasional baby-sitter. So this morning comes a commemorative article just published about the... Sign in to see full entry.

It's not always sunny in Philadelphia - or Mundane for that matter.
In fact, after two glorious days of sunshine and yard-work weather, we're having nasty, gusting winds and snow is coming. This could interfere with my volunteer shift at the library, as I have this fair-weather policy: no driving or walking in icy/snowy conditions. Unlike my previous weekend's... "Sometimes I wonder if I'll spend the lonely nights...
Dreaming of your kiss...." "Stardust," that beautiful old standard made popular in the 1930s by Hoagy Carmichael, was on almost every prom program and Saturday Night dance at Fireman's Hall when I was in high school. Sometimes there'd be a vocalist singing Mitchell Parish's lyrics, but the tune set... Sign in to see full entry.

How the Brain Works
It's a mystery. Online at MSN this a.m., a teaser popped up: Top Ten mysteries of the brain. According to that slide show, they don't know how Alzeimer's works, why certain proteins attack the brain. They don't know why some people are brilliant and others stupid. They don't know why some people are... Sign in to see full entry.

Traffic Radio
It was an old jazz dance tune, an instrumental with a good beat, and I felt my head working like a metronome as I waited in traffic for the light to change. I heard a voice like a memory, in a room where a mirror ball sparkled and sent bright reflections through the darkened ballroom. “Hey, babe,... Sign in to see full entry.
