Saraswati, explained

Some of you have asked me details about Saraswati, the goddess whose print I posted yesterday. I took the liberty of exceprting this from Wikipedia. In Hinduism, Saraswati is one of the goddesses, the other two being Lakshmi and Durga, that form the female counterpart of the Trimurti. Saraswati has... Sign in to see full entry.

Saraswati, by Ravi Varma

Here is the print of Saraswati, the goddess of the river and of learning, I wrote about some time ago. Traditionally, Saraswati is supposed to carry a book in one hand, a string of crystals in the second and the veena (the instrument she plays) is on her lap. In this print of Ravi Varma, the print... The Pleasures of Shopping

Last Thursday, my friend Ragini called saying she had a task and could think of no-one better to ask for assistance but me. I was curious. It was a research task, related to shopping. You are right, I said. Ragini is assisting the public relations company that is organizing a Fortune 500 event in... Sign in to see full entry.

It has rained!

This evening, at 7 PM, just as my friend Ragini and I were leaving the coffee shop, we noticed that it was pouring outside. Then, we heard the thunder and saw the lightening. It was marvelous. Happy that the increasingly hot and humid weather was letting up, we decided to venture outside after 15... Sign in to see full entry.

Oppression

There are my kinds of oppression. Right now, its oppression by weather. It is so unbelievably hot, you cannot imagine. At 7.30 AM, the air is heavy, hazy and nothing moves - especially leaves. We just walked Aloe and came back sweating (yes, it is HUMID). Sitting in a chair with a mild fan still... Sign in to see full entry.

A Gift of Love

A dear friend is going to turn 50 next weekend. What should we give her, asked my sister Saroj? Should we go to the antique shop in M block market? Oh yes, I said. And we set out. Before that, I called my sister Roma and asked if she would like to go in with the two of us for a gift. A good idea,... Sign in to see full entry.

Warts and all

Day before yesterday, I had a wart removed. It was between the base of my throat and my right breast. About two years ago I felt it for the first time and ignored it. It was just there, getting only a little bigger, but there. In the beginning of this year it got dried and tough and I clipped a bit... Sign in to see full entry.

Jet lag, disturbed sleep and months of the year

Back from a trip to North America, I am caught in a time warp - of day and night. When it is day in India it is getting to be night in North America. When it is night here, it is daytime there. Time and space conspire to confuse the body and mind. Sleep comes when I should be driving, eating,... Sign in to see full entry.

Homecoming, Coming home

I'm back. Back home. After three weeks in the US, my son Kabir is installed at Ohio University, and Mahesh and I are back to a life which some friends describe as the "empty nest". For me going back to Athens, Ohio, was a kind of homecoming. I lived in Athens from 1973-1978, leaving to pursue a more... Sign in to see full entry.

A National Holiday

It's 6.26 PM. The day is almost over. Well, almost. The sky is slowly darkening, and the sun is low in the western sky. The radio sitting on the ground floor plays jazz. Aloe has just returned from a walk. Mahesh and Kabir call me to say they are on their way home. They left early this morning, to... Sign in to see full entry.
