A Train Trip

Last weekend I took a train journey. As Kabir, our son is leaving to study in the US, Mahesh and I thought it would be an idea to visit Mahesh's two sisters and their families in Dehra Doon, the capital of the state Uttarakhand, about 350 kms from Delhi. Some of Kabir's cousins (and Mahesh's nieces)... Sign in to see full entry.

Rain, traffic jams and pakoras

Yesterday, I spent four hours stranded in traffic. A journey to a meeting which would usually take 45 minutes took us this long. Fortunately Kabir drove for almost 3 hours, and then I took over. Nature and humans colluded to create such a situation - the rain, poor conditions of roads (read large... Sign in to see full entry.

African Cloth and Masks

So, on the second floor, where we hang out and work, is the arrangement of an African cloth I found in a heap in a store in Johannesburg, South Africa. I mounted it on a board about 10 years ago. The masks are from all over. On the far left are two musical instruments. Sign in to see full entry.

The Picture and Artifact Wall

This is the result of the hard work of the carpenter and me - but mostly the capenter. All on the ground floor. A mixture of wooden artifacts and mounted postcards, Korean woven mat and other pictures. Sign in to see full entry.

Picture This!

I am at home, spending my morning with the carpenter. It's a long overdue project (like three years). After we shifted into our home four years ago, we have most of our framed pictures and artifacts lying in boxes. Last month I got some framed. Now, we had to put them up. The carpenter's name is... Family and Friends - Goings and Comings

This week has been one of goings and comings. My niece, Nomita, came back from the US on Friday, after living there for three years - completing a Masters programme in Architecture in Boston and then working in New York. Mahesh and I went over to see her, carrying Bengali sweets made of milk and... Sign in to see full entry.

A Three-Wheeler Ride in the Rain

The rain. Short of driving, watching and listening to the rain, I enjoy taking a three-wheeler ride in it. Two days ago, I took a three-wheeler (a popular form of transport on three wheels - two at the back and one in front, and open on the sides). As soon I got into the three-wheeler or 'auto' as... The Peacock on the Tomb

Yesterday, I saw the mots spectacular sight. A peacock on the top of a tomb. I was waiting to interview a therapist for an article I am writing. Sitting on the verandah, under the fan, and waiting, I looked around. The verandah looked into the garden with a small patch of green grass, flowers and... Sign in to see full entry.

Female Foeticide and Foot Binding

Yesterday I watched a debate on one of our news channels on female foeticide. There were the usual suspects - those for and against it. Arguments about declining sex ratio in India (5 million girls aborted every year); the right to choose the sex of a couples child; the right to have boys, etc, etc.... Sign in to see full entry.
