Paint, varnish and disorientation

We decided to get the house painted. Since a week, there have been three men in the house - cleaning, scraping, painting and fixing. It's a huge affair. The rooms have to be cleared, walls prepared, cracks and other repair work done (with a smelly substance), and then starts the work of putting... Sign in to see full entry.

A trip to Old Delhi

Yesterday, I went to old Delhi. New Delhi is the capital of India - the 'New' being the planned city. The 'Old' is literally the old, haphazard and unplanned city. One part of old Delhi I really like is called Chandni Chowk. Chandni is moonlight and chowk is a square. One of the most famous things... Sign in to see full entry.

Internet woes

Since one month we have had Internet blues. A connection that worked fine for years, suddenly started acting up. We moved to broadband a year ago and were thrilled at the 24 hours high speed service. It was a dream. Then suddenly, it changed. My husband, being in the telecommunications industry,... Sign in to see full entry.

These we edited, translated and sold to the mainstream media - mostly... Sign in to see full entry.

Fish, Fortune and Friendship

Sunday was a fishy day. My friend Sheela (who I helped buy a shawl for her sister) returned from Hyderabad and called. I asked how her trip was. She was more keen to talk about the lovely weather in Delhi and tell me that she had just found a maid that delighted her heart - not only was she a whizz... Sign in to see full entry.

Giving Thanks

Yesterday, I was part of a Thanksgiving celebration. It is my favourite American tradition. My friend Carol, who has a gathering every year, organises one very year. This year, it was about 20 people in Carol's large home, in her backyard. I also asked my friend Supriya, who is visiting from... Sign in to see full entry.

Excitement

I am so excited! I have been approached by Delhi University to do a few two hour-sessions with third year students on various topics related to mass communications. I met with the professor who is organising the courses. I will do the first session on Monday, focusing on gender perspectives. It's... Sign in to see full entry.

Kebabs by the roadside

Yesterday was a very spontaneous day. Mahesh and I had planned to see two movies back to back. At the theatre we discovered the first one wasn't there at all (newspapers running an old timetable). So, we got tickets for a film we really didn't want to see and had an hour to kill. We opted to spend... Sign in to see full entry.
