Then you saw it, now you don't...

On the quick-sale table at the grocery store last week, I picked up a little potted basil plant on its last legs. Anything on the table is $1, so it isn't much loss if it doesn't get used. But I was determined to use it, thinking of a Thai-style soup that uses Asian vegetables, coconut milk, lime... Sign in to see full entry.

It's not always about the cooking.

A while back, I suddenly noticed how very scudgey the cabinets were, what with several years of accumulated grease and dust and ick. It happens so gradually, if inevitably, and I just didn't notice how bad it was getting. The golden brown wood was dark around the knobs, and the knobs themselves were... Sign in to see full entry.

Savory biscuits

I promised the guys next door some biscuits today, and now the biscuits are out of the oven, but indications are that Charlie is not out of bed. Typically, he goes to bed 4am or later, even, so this is not unusual. I used Kodiak brand 'just add water' mix, added some cheddar cheese and diced ham and... Sign in to see full entry.

"Skinny my sandwich!"

That is an option at a particular sandwich shop I used to go to. (Haven't been back since they took everything I liked off the menu.) Now, I skinny my sandwiches at home to lose a bunch of the carbs and to make room for more of the good stuff in between the bread and the bread. This morning it was a... Sign in to see full entry.

Substitutions

Today I finally made some ground chicken into lettuce wraps, before the chicken and the lettuce got too old. What slowed me down on this project was the lack of chopped water chestnuts which give such a nice bit of crunch. The store yesterday just didn't have any of any kind! But the ground chicken... New things and gadgets

As the coffee brews, I am finishing breakfast... Well, interrupting it. Yesterday I neglected to put away the bag of frozen seafood that I get at Trader Joe's, so there was about half a cup of thawed scallops, shrimp, and calimari demanding to be used at once! It got sauteed with garlic, olive oil... Sign in to see full entry.

Candied Bacon!

I had some of this maple-candied bacon from a restaurant--5 strips for over $8. Tasty... but oh so easy to make at home! I laid bacon strips spread out on a baking dish, drizzled maple syrup over, and baked in the oven at 350F for ~60 minutes. Towards the end of the hour, I checked it a couple of... Fishy business

Last night I pan-fried some sable-fish fillets. I kept it simple, just some olive oil in the skillet and a little Yoshida sauce on the fish. Wow, was it good! It's a very delicate white fish with a thin, grey skin. The pieces were about an inch and a half thick at their biggest part. The texture is... Sign in to see full entry.

Tot Waffles deluxe!

When I made them over the weekend, I put the tater tots on the waffle iron first, then the shredded pork over. It all fell to bits as I tried to turn it out on the plate. Messy! And there was mess to clean out of the waffle iron, too. So--today, I put the pork in first, the tots on top. After a few... Sign in to see full entry.

Quick note on cold fish

The fish arrived in a well-insulated box--cold, cold, cold! I got very cold fingers sorting it out, and repacking the freezer to accomodate it. It came with some dry ice, too! Fun to play with as long as one doesn't actually touch it bare-handed! Tonight after we get back from COSine, we will be... Sign in to see full entry.
