Breakfast adventures!

This morning I nuked a packet of the Tasty Bite organic rice and poached a couple of eggs in the vegetable korma. I added a dollop of plain yogurt on top, and that was a very good first breakfast! As I only used half of each packet, it might also be second breakfast, though without the eggs. What... Sign in to see full entry.

French Toast

Today I made French toast for breakfast. I started with whole-grain bread, the kind sliced extra-thin--reducing the carb count considerably. The batter was three eggs, a slosh of almond milk, a dash of vanilla, and a sprinkle of nutmeg. After toasting the bread--a trick I learned from Charlie--I... Sign in to see full entry.

Tasty!

I've tried their Madras Lentils before, so I was not too shy of ordering from Tasty Bites online. They arrived yesterday, and I am not disappointed in my choices: Yellow squash and lentils in coconut milk, vegetable korma, and rice flavored with lime and lemongrass. I tried all three last night for... Sign in to see full entry.

Sprouts!

I like shopping at Sprouts. They have a great variety of vegetables, make their own fresh sushi, and their own sausages. They often carry things other grocery stores don't, and this latest time they had corn on the cob quite a bit cheaper than the Kroger store I usually go to. They have a large... Corn season continues...

At Sprouts today I found corn in the husk for 5/$2, so grabbed another 8 ears. I want to try a trick my friend Joanne shared with me that her parents do: Cut off both ends, microwave the ear in the husk for 3 minutes, then when it comes out, grab--with heat protection--at the silk end, and squeeze... cool solution!

My mom always boiled corn on the cob, adding milk to the water because Dad said it made it more tender. I've never been convinced that's true. For years now, I've roasted corn in the husk in the oven. The husk provides moisture to essentially steam the corn. It takes around 30 minutes at 425. These... Sign in to see full entry.

Partners in Cookery

I have a pan I use for almost everything I cook on top of the stove. It's a standard-sized wok. I like how it's narrower at the center so oil can pool there instead of spreading out the way it does across a skillet. It has high sides so there's less grease splatter. I can use any size lid over the... Sign in to see full entry.

Carrots

At the Asia Pacific Market this past week I found some huge fat carrots, and tonight I roasted the two I brought, each one about ten inches long and maybe an inch and a half in diameter. I oiled them with olive oil and sprinkled a little yoshida sauce on them then stuck them in the oven at 350 for... Sign in to see full entry.

Eggplant again...

The eggplants at the grocery store lately have been looking pretty fresh and of moderate size, so I've been playing with a couple of recipes. One I've mentioned before, baba ghanouj, and another which is a more Italian sort of antipasto. Baba ghanouj is roasted eggplant mixed with sesame tahini,... Sign in to see full entry.

Same old grind... and new!

It's been sitting in the box for a while, but finally came out: the new coffee-bean grinder. This was because I had accidentally bought beans instead of ground coffee, but I only just now ran out of the previous ground supply. Before grinding the beans, though, I had another project: Mushrooms! I... Sign in to see full entry.
