Peanuts OR pretzels...

In just a few hours I expect to be in the sky pointed more-or-less in an easterly direction... In my three to-be-checked bags there is laundry which couldn't get washed because the power-- easier to pack when it's toss rather than fold neatly, but harder to pack in the dark: I am not sure what, exactly, I am taking along. I hope it isn't a stack of tablecloths and bedclothes and that bag of stuff meant for donation! There are also, for sure, a gingerbread house kit and a couple of pounds of... We were powerless...

from Thursday night's windstorm through today at 5 PM. Some folks are still huddling over candles to keep warm, or trying to cook the thawing contents of their freezers on the woodstove-- and I could do that, really I could have done that another day or two... But I am packing to leave tomorrow morning for 3 weeks far away, and man, that's no fun to do by candle-light, especially when I was gonna do my laundry Friday. Instead, I packed it in a duffle, and I will do the laundry when I get... Sign in to see full entry.

Mulled Cider recipe for Offbeats

Start with some of that lovely rich, unfiltered apple cider... Put it in a big pot (I like to make it on the woodstove when the fire is going strong for a while) and add several cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, cloves and allspice, plus two or three slices of orange and of lemon. After a while, when it is good and hot, ladle it into a mug and sip... Careful, it's hot! Let it boil down to make a fantastic syrup, or even further, to make an amazing, intense spiced apple candy! My granddaughter Zoe...

I'm going to spend Christmas with my daughter and her daughter... I haven't seen them in some time, but a year ago summer they were here, and these pictures came at the end of a long and tiring day. Mama was out and Zoe was wearily eating her dinner... Then she saw I had the camera out and aimed at her: Sign in to see full entry.

Further conversation about change... Marriage & Institution

This began as a comment in saul relative's recent blog that began with consideration of Cheney's gay daughter's exercising her free will to choose pregnancy. ( dec 6, http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/saul_relative17/ ) The issue of who should be able to marry and who, not, would never arise if we really had separation of church and state. The law is based on culture-based morality as defined by the Judeo-Christian tradition. It is hardly universal! In fact, many cultures have recognized and... Sign in to see full entry.

The topic is CHANGE

Whether its an individual trying to change a habit, or a society trying to change direction, the dynamics all revolve around beliefs. What does it take to change the habit of a person or a society? It takes a willingness to question and update some truth that has been cherished and defended for years, for generations. The network of beliefs, of evidences and proofs, of investment of emotion and resource has arrived at a situation in which has become a greater problem than the one it solved. It... What is your definition of War, of Peace?

It is too easy to say, There must not be war, or There must be peace. Is 'war' necessarily bloody physical conflict, or is it also oppression without the foot-soldiers walking steadfastly into enemy fire? Is it the quiet violence of a police state? Is it the lies a government tells its own people to stay in power and further its own agenda? Can it be any kind of opposing of perceived injustice? What is 'peace'? Is it simply the absence of bloody conflict? Is it status quo in which nothing... Sign in to see full entry.

The thing is, war works.

It works in the short term only, perhaps, but that's enough for most people. The short term can be a long time, long enough for people who only think of their own immediate relief from pain, anxiety, discomfort, their sense of imbalance, injustice... It takes a kind of maturity and wisdom to put aside what it desirable for one's self in favor of what will be better for the world we pass along. People with kids have more of that sense-- sometimes. But the world is full of selfish parents, too.... Sign in to see full entry.

Discovering Diabetes

Last year I joined the ever-growing diagnosed type-2 diabetics club, and that has demanded a few changes in my life: More exercise... better food consumption... regular mealtimes... None of those changes are easy. But some of them are not as hard as one might think. Collateral discoveries: It is easier to exercise when traveling if one chooses destinations where one cannot resist the impulse to get out and walk! It's sitting at home that makes it a matter of choosing to get up and go out, or... Sign in to see full entry.

for LOTR & Tolkien fans...

Once again, I am caught up in an on-going poetry contest on the Tolkien site I frequent. Here's the latest result-- an ottavo rima on the theme of Fangorn Wood: Dark, dark is the the rich earth where our roots sink deep. Gloomy the air where we reach towards the sky. Long, long the years we have stood here asleep; Diminished, our peace as the ages passed by. But now we awaken to realize the creep of tendrils of smoke, drifing bitter and dry: Our borders are breached and our enemies walk Under... Sign in to see full entry.
