Most things change, why can't the Japanese?

Sorry, but it's more on whales. I'll post later on something else but for the moment I'm still mad about this. If you go to Whitby in Yorkshire you will find, amongst the Captain Cook and Dracula signs, an arch made from whalebone. In the museum there are pictures of other architectural uses,... How many Mongolian coastal resorts can you name?

I was going to go off on one about postal voting, or reducing the British electoral system to a third world farce as it is better known. However, I found something better to write about - saving the whale. OK, so it's not exactly new, and they're basically safe now aren't they. Well no, it seems.... Sign in to see full entry.

One man one vote. What an interesting idea.

I've just been browsing the end of year news on the net and noticed that Cardinal Sin died last year. I liked him. Any man who can exist in the Catholic Church with a name like that has got to be good. One of the stories in his obituary is about a conversation he had with Ferdinand Marcos, who... Killing criminals - for and against

As I said, I really have a problem deciding either way, so I had a look at some websites. How about this for a statistic - 67% of American police chiefs don't believe that capital punishment is an effective deterrent against homicide. They believe that reducing drug use is the most effective means.... Sign in to see full entry.

Is killing criminals right?

First, a quick word to avant-garde, thanks for the comment I will see about preparing something but will probably wait till the spring when I can add some photographs. With this in mind I am going to leave my intended subject (the Civil War) until then. So now I need a suitable subject to fill a... Sign in to see full entry.

Don't believe all you read about global warming

I had a bit of a shock a few weeks ago when I found out that global warming (which sounds a reasonable idea if you live in the English midlands) wasn't actually going to make me any warmer. Here I am, living on a hill about as far from the coast as you can get in a narrow island, thinking that... Sign in to see full entry.

eBay and the US of A

My first big time exposure to Americans was via eBay. Until then I only knew them as cheery people with big white smiles and alarming dress sense. On eBay people started wishing me all sorts of Christian things and asking (literally) soul-searching questions of me. Frankly I found it all a bit of a... Sign in to see full entry.

Christmas is over, long live Christmas

Christmas is over for another year and I'm relaxing. It went well, we had no arguments and the kids liked the presents. As usual I'm a little ashamed of myself making so much of a few days out of the year and as usual I have resolved to be a better person next year. I have also decided that next... Why are American planes so cool?

Why is it that since WW2 the Americans have had such cool planes? Think of bombing Germany and the B17 is the bomber that comes to mind. Was it the big machine guns or the polished silver or the fact you got Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable to fly in them? Somehow our bombers never seem so cool, though... Sign in to see full entry.
