Famous American Rugby players.

Isn't fame a funny thing? People always seem to know that George W Bush played at Yale and Bill Clinton played at Oxford. Or if you extend it to South America the name Che Guevara crops up. But how many of you know that the American team won the Olympic Gold Medal for rugby in 1920 and 1924? And... Sign in to see full entry.

Belgium gets bird flu. Do you prefer nuclear war or Kylie Minogue?

Well, it seems that Belgium has got one over on us. They have the first case of bird flu in western Europe. As usual with our press they are running lead stories on a lawyer stabbed in London; Pitt/Aniston/Jolie; the normal evils (Gordon Brown, George Galloway, ASBOs, easy school exams); a child... UK comes in 1st place. America trails in 7th.

According to the latest research the UK is the country most at risk for the spread of bird flu. We are small, densely populated and widely visited by both tourists and business visitors. We are also the only European country considered to be at extreme risk from the pandemic. This isn't all bad... Sign in to see full entry.

The American invasion of Canada

Being short of ideas tonight I thought I'd have a bit of a laugh and see what Google had to say about American plans to invade Canada. I suspected that reports I'd heard were probably a wind-up. However, I was wrong. Not only did America have plans to invade Canada they were actually part of a plan... Sign in to see full entry.

Why do Americans get hot under the collar about empire?

I keep reading blogs where people go off on one at what they see as the insult of America being accused of forming a modern empire. Well think of this - empire is not all bad. The Roman Empire did a lot of good. I was born after the British Empire finished (though our school room map still preserved... Sign in to see full entry.

UK, USA, cricket, baseball and Empire.

As a result of my last post Trevor_Cunnington asked me if I like cricket, a question that goes straight to the heart of the difference between the UK and the USA. The truth is that I like any way of passing the day without moving too much. You can do this whether you are watching or even playing... Sign in to see full entry.

Poker on TV - a sport or the American way?

I've just been watching poker on TV. I can't believe they actually televise it. And my wife can't believe I sit there and watch it. To be honest I'm not quite sure what I'm watching. It fills the sort of late night slot reserved for American sport, they have commentators like sport and they have... Sign in to see full entry.

Celebrity Big Brother - how can an MP spare the time?

I just caught the last two minutes of Celebrity Big Brother and guess who I saw? A man well known to people on both sides of the Atlantic, and probably in Iraq too. George Galloway MP. He has his supporters as well as his critics and I'm sure hasn't all bad, but what does he think he's doing on a TV... Sign in to see full entry.

Tony Blair hasn't got back to me yet

I half-expected an email from the Prime Minister this evening, telling me he would try and do better. Well, slightly less than half, so I wasn't too disappointed when it didn't arrive. So here's something else for you to fix Mr Blair. When you came to power you said you were going to reform the... Sign in to see full entry.

Election fraud - not just a third world problem Mr Blair

Every time I see elections in Afghanistan or Iraq I think how lucky I am to have a vote, particularly one that hasn't involved a foreign army dismantling my country. I also used to think that I was lucky to live in a country where I didn't have to dip my finger in an ink pot to avoid electoral... Sign in to see full entry.
