Quiet time

My lovely sister slipped away gently and quietly last night, ironically at about the time I was writing here. Her husband rang me this morning with the sad news, and of course he was a bit shaken, having only slept three hours. I'm glad she was at home and surrounded with the love of her family, who... Could it get much worse?

After nearly a year, I'd say my mother has now settled into her life in the nursing home. All of the house sale problems have gone away, and I can pay her bills without worrying that she will run out of funds (five years from now I may have to start worrying but she's fine for quite a while).... What exactly is 'Care'?

It's been a while since I found time (and energy) to write up our adventures in the world of the nursing home - finding the right one (do we ever know until we try it?); settling in the loved one, keeping up their spirits, tackling the financials etc. etc. There is so much to learn, and no manual -... Pot Calling Kettle...?

It's been a difficult year - all the work associated with my mother's affairs since she went into hospital and then the nursing home has quite drained me. My loved one often tells me I don't communicate effectively, by which he means I don't think and express myself in the same way he does. We have... Sign in to see full entry.

And They're Back

Bit of a late night last night, picking up my son and his friend from Gatwick. It rained heavily all the way and I followed a Volvo doing 30mph on the A29 for about ten miles (very frustrating for the ten or so motorists behind me as well) but other than that it was easy enough, just a bit long..... And tonight's dinner...

A busy day today. Son is still adjusting to a different hemisphere so is more or less out of it. We went for a walk around the village in the late morning, and he wanted to have breakfast, or an early lunch, in the pub by the water. Arriving at 11:20, we found it wasn't open yet. (A bit like France... Sign in to see full entry.

Ris de Veau

Do not confuse 'ris' (which I shall explain in a moment) with 'riz' - rice. It looked tempting; ris de veau in a creamy cognac sauce, as a starter in a very pleasant logis. Some kind of risotto, perhaps. Ris, as opposed to riz, means sweetbreads. I won't go into more detail as to which part of the... Sign in to see full entry.

Crow Pie

Yesteday I attended the school reunion, quite a last minute decision as I didn't know who was attending and whether I would know anyone, nor even if some of them were still alive...! - It's been nearly forty years. I went to the previous one, five years ago, and my partner came with me, because I... Sign in to see full entry.

Did You Know Minneapolis Has a Morris Dancing Team?

No? Neither did I, until today when we happened upon a young man singing to himself in a part of Ludlow Castle that has very good acoustics. As we generally do, we struck up a conversation with him, which is how we found out that he is a Morris Dancer. Not only that, he is from Minneapolis,... Sign in to see full entry.

Life with The Boy, again

i was in the kitchen using the bench top for some sewing, with my cutting board... fabric, board, pins all clearly in view. He came in to make a drink and sandwich. I made a polite comment that he hadn't gone to tennis this morning (I do try to make conversation if I can and it seems appropriate.).... Sign in to see full entry.
