More on Seeking Substitutes...
I spoke yesterday of how we try to find substitutes for our comfort foods, and how undesirable that habit is in developing healthy life habits. We often do the same in other areas of dieting. We are told "no ice cream" or "no mashed potatoes" and we start looking for something to mimic those foods...

When Things Go Wrong...
Do you eat "comfort food" when your life gets wacky? What are your comfort foods? For many people, they are high-carb and/or high-fat items like ice cream or macaroni and cheese. When we realise that such foods are sabotaging our attempts to lose weight and be healthy, we often begin looking for...

A Great Book for Struggling Low-Carbers
This is a fantastic resource for low-carbers who are having trouble staying on, or getting back on, their low-carb plans: The 7-Day Low-Carb Rescue and Recovery Plan, by Rachel and Richard Heller. It's fabulous. I can't wait to try out the plan. (Have to go to the grocery store, first.) I'm planning...

Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics
I'm reading a really scary book, and if what it says is true, then Mark Twain (or Benjamin Disraeli) was right in lumping statistics in with lies and damned lies. What if.. Everything that you've been told about the health risks of obesity is wrong? Being just 5 pounds underweight posed more of a...

The Ultimate "Sinful" Dessert Is Low-Carb
I sometimes get tired of following my low-carb diet, like when I want a slice of rich cheesecake or a bowl of creamy ice cream. The low-carb versions of these are so expensive and hard-to-come-by that it's not worth seeking them out. But on 24 December 2004, I discovered Coeur a la Creme. All I can...

Watching Carbs and Missing Mashed Potatoes?
Try mashed rutabaga instead! Really, I did this last night and was amazed at how wonderfully good these were. I forget where I got the recipe... probably from one of the America's Test Kitchens or Cook's Illustrated cookbooks. I adapted it a little (of course), and here's what I got. Ingredients: 2...

A Low-Carb Product That Is Actually Useful
I recently came across Progresso's Carb Monitor soups in my local supermarket and decided to give them a try to see if they were any good. I was pleasantly surprised. The soups I have tried are tasty, relatively generous with veggies/meat, and low enough in carbs that I don't feel guilty eating a...

Is a Puzzlement
I like hominy. I really, really like hominy. But it has presented me with quite an interesting question. Why does hominy have twice as much carbohydrate per serving as plain corn niblets? It doesn't make sense. Hominy isn't made from sweet corn, like niblets are. Hominy is field corn processed with...

Keep Your Grubby Hands Off My Beef!
(from 2 March 2005) Okay, so, there's a mad cow in North America, and everyone's having a cow (sorry) about whether beef is or isn't safe to eat. People are swearing off beef...or turning vegetarian...to protect themselves from this latest plague. Well, I'm not. I'm gonna keep on eating my beef...

I Cured My Eczema Without Medication
In 1987, while working at a fast food restaurant where I had to wash dishes and clean counters and tables with strong chemicals, I developed a disfiguring, violently itchy, weeping rash on my forearms and fingers. It got so bad that I had to quit my job because the customers were complaining about...
