Ferdinand V and Isabella 1 were determined that their Spanish Inquisition should be far more zealous, unrelenting and cruel in its suppression of heresy than the Roman ( or Papal ) Inquisition that existed elsewhere. Pope Sixtus 1V gave them the power to appoint three bishops to oversee the running of the Inquisition, and to replace or dismiss them at will.
