Why Oil Isn't Green...and other Greenish Matters

It is Tuesday, June 23, 1999. Captain Joseph Hazelwood dons apron and gloves at the Bean’s Cafe soup kitchen in Anchorage, Alaska. He works silently emptying lettuce into a container as part of his thousand-hour community service sentence. Monday he loaded a truck with abandoned auto parts and assorted junk thrown along Anchorage roadways. He has a month to go, working off two hundred hours of his sentence. One month a year for five years. By the end of his sentence he will by fifty-eight. It... Sign in to see full entry.

The Sorry State of Education in US

It is a fact that American young people compare very poorly with youths from other developed nations in their reading and writing skills, in their mathematical ability, in their knowledge of geography. Nobody really denies the problem, although it is frequently stated in ways that lend support to specific points of view. Depending on whom you ask, the blame for this unfortunate situation is attributed to almost every element of our society. The teachers, the parents, the unions, the government,... Why Liberals Just Don't Get It!

Have you ever wondered why Liberals don't ever seem to understand what is really happening? Have you ever wondered why members of the Political Left will shout down a speaker with whom they disagree, but insist on "freedom of speach" for themselves? Have you ever wondered why all the Democrat candidates for President seem to come out with nearly identical spin on something Bush has done--spin so obvious that one cringes just to hear it? Read my recent post: I Can See Clearly Now for an answer... Sign in to see full entry.

Ethics vs. Morality

Have you had something stolen from you lately? Do you know somebody who has? Do you believe the world is less safe than it used to be? Have you asked yourself why societal values seem to be changing for the worse? Pick up any newspaper; listen to any newscast. Visit a courtroom; watch C-Span. Even if you do not have a standard against which you can measure what you see and hear, you will be left with the impression that there is something fundamentally wrong with today’s society. You are not... Sign in to see full entry.

The Before and After of Birth and Death

The human condition has two and only two absolutes. Born we are, and die we must. Everything between is a crap shoot; we control or not, influence or not, prevent or not—except birth and death. From primitive times birth has been haphazard at best. For reasons that are, themselves, the subject for discourse, the morality of birth has been the jealously guarded demesne of the shaman and his modern scion. Men and women, and ultimately women acting on their own, have risen to the dubious challenge... Sign in to see full entry.

The IRS

When my father passed away in early 1987, my attorney sister and I took on the formidable task of plowing through the papers he left behind. Among them we discovered a series of letters that clearly illustrates a prevalent fact in our society. My father was a kind and gentle man—except when it came to communicating with the IRS. His letter exchanges with that agency over the years is nothing short of astonishing. My dear father, who had a kind word for everybody, completely forgot that even the... Sign in to see full entry.

I Can See Clearly Now

Carl Jung, the influential psychologist from the mid-20th century, called it the “Aha Experience.” It’s happened to you several times in your life: that defining moment when you look up from a difficult problem and discover the solution … that indescribable feeling of “Aha … I’ve got it!” Young scientists often describe that the first time they develop a significant insight, there is an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction, almost a feeling of power that accompanies the discovery. Often they... Sign in to see full entry.

The Ozone Hole

The greens have “alerted” all of us to the alarming possibility that we are destroying the earth’s ozone layer, and threatening all life on earth. An interesting premise. Let’s examine it more closely. Ozone is an unstable molecule formed by lightning and when free oxygen atoms are released in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. In our atmosphere, most ozone is created when normal oxygen molecules are split apart by the action of ultraviolet light in normal sunshine. Ozone remains at the top of the...
