the world of associations

It’s interesting to take a look at the preconceived ideas and associations that float around in the mind when it comes to a country that you have never visited. For example when I look at a map of the US, my most spontaneous associations tend to be related to movies and television shows that I’ve... Sign in to see full entry.

I need some help from USA residents

I’ve been toying with the idea of jumping on a plane to LA and making my way across the continent to NY by train. I picked LA as the start off point because it's the cheapest place to get to from Australia. I haven’t been to the US so I have no idea about the feasibility of this idea. Does this seem... wunderlust

I’ve been reading a lot of travel literature lately: the Mediterranean journey of Paul Theroux moving through bleak tourist towns in Spain, the aromatic hills of Corsica, the bombed out terrain of Sarajevo, the poverty of Albania and more. I’ve now turned my attention to the writing of Bill Bryson... Sign in to see full entry.

baby, how funny is the blues

I’ve been listening to a lot of blues while I wait for the delivery of my harmonica. And by blues I’m particularly talking about the early music of the incomparable John Lee Hooker. There’s something pure about the simple uncluttered sound of a voice and guitar sounding out the sometimes grand and... Sign in to see full entry.

i will play the harmonica as I drift away

I'm giving serious consideration to learning the harmonica. I can't help but believe that it's one of the coolest instruments in the world alongside the saxophone and an elegantly played piano. In fact I am looking to a harmonica lead renaissance in my life. I want to become bluesy, funky, rousingly... Sign in to see full entry.

floating in an altered state

Last night I had a one hour session in a floatation tank. I’d forgotten how beneficial and relaxing it is to flow on highly salinated body temperature water in a dark enclosed space. It gives the body a break from the downward pull of gravity and I guess there’s a lot of strong symbolic association... Sign in to see full entry.

i've reached a critical point

The back drama is continuing and I'm sleep deprived. I woke at 4 am this morning and had a bout of sobbing mixed with laughter. It's as though the muscles of my back have decided to scream "We exist, we are stressed, we demand attention." The general sense of stress is starting to impact on other... unsure if I sold out .. i bought a machine

I spent a year at a natural therapies college learning the fine points of remedial massage therapy and I became qualified. It didn't really work out as a professional option but it was a great learning experience. I had a great massage the other night and it highlighted the fairly tight mess my back... inspiration, early morning wakening and quality time

This morning I received a letter from someone who circumnavigated the southern oceans at the age of 70 and he did it with two other men about the same age. It's probably one of the most inspiring stories I've heard for quite sometime. It leaves me contemplating what I want to achieve: small and... Sign in to see full entry.

my back, massage and honesty

Last night I had a massage for the first time in ages. My back’s been killing me lately (actually ever since I was in Hobart) but I was still surprised how knotted and congested I was right up through the rhomboids, scalenes and traps and one session was definitely not enough. I am a believer in the... Sign in to see full entry.
