Reaching out

One of the prevention tips I got from the Prevent Child Abuse America website was to reach out to parents who are experiencing stressful times. I have to tell you that I wish this had been the case with me when I was in high school. I'm just now starting to deal with the anger I feel at being... Sign in to see full entry.

Recognizing the risk factors for child abuse

Here are some of the risk factors for child abuse: 1. Is the family under stress of some sort? Perhaps the father just became unemployed. Perhaps they are about to lose their home in a foreclosure proceeding. It may even be that the extended family is making all this stress worse by setting... Sign in to see full entry.

Five ways to prevent child abuse

First of all, reach out. You can do a lot of prevention just by lending a helping hand. Whether it's by allowing a young mom to talk out her stress or going with your youngster to soccer practice, you're reaching out to lend a helping hand. (All too many people just pass by on the other side,... Sign in to see full entry.

Just how subtle can abuse be?

My belief is that abuse can be very subtle. (Note that I phrased it in such a way as to tell you, by inference, that I have nothing more than my belief to back up my statement.) To give you one example that has occurred to me as I have been writing, let's just say you observe a man and a woman... Sign in to see full entry.

"He said, she said"

There are situations that are genuinely confusing in abusive households. For that matter, there are situations that are confusing, situations happening in perfectly functional homes. To give you a fictional example of what I'm talking about: Let's say we have two sisters, one sensitive and shy and... Sign in to see full entry.

Time for me to vent, yet again (Spoiler alert for Law & Order SVU fans)

A few weeks ago, I was watching the season-opening episode for Law & Order: SVU, about a mentally-ill man who kidnapped a child looking very much like his own biological child. He was in the midst of a relapse of a form of schizophrenia when he did so; he had been denied his Zyprexa and kicked out... Sign in to see full entry.

Covert operations

Not too long ago, I talked about how many abusers were people who knew how to sweep their behavior patterns under the rug - they were fully aware that their behavior patterns were socially unacceptable (although they themselves saw their own behavior as justified, or at least tried to excuse or... If you remember one thing...

I would like readers of this blog to remember that we are in the fight against abuse together. It is surely important for an abused woman to find a way to keep some money set aside for herself and her children, to keep a bag packed, and so forth, so that she can escape. But she needs to know that... Sign in to see full entry.

Good for you!

Thanks to everyone who commented - worldwide as well as on BN - Steve Irwin was forced to confront his treatment of his four-week-old son on television. Although he did one of those Michael Jackson-style denials that his behavior was harmful, the fact is that if it weren't for the protests of people... Sign in to see full entry.

Steve, what were you thinking?

American viewers in particular - and perhaps Australians - know who Steve Irwin is. Here in the USA, he's known as the Crocodile Hunter, the subject of an Animal Planet series and one feature film. He is also a husband and father. Well, it's his turn to get in trouble - this time for dangling his... Sign in to see full entry.

About this Blog
The name of the post is derived from a Francis Schaeffer book, and intended to rebut something I'd seen on the Internet. The blog itself is about what I've learned about relationships from the ones I've had, and the ones I've observed. It will not be pleasant to read, and might wander off-topic occasionally, but is intended to be a long-term blog reading like a public journal.
