You mean to tell me normal isn't healthy?

Just a few moments ago, I was looking at a book I haven't gotten rid of yet, entitled Why Normal Isn't Healthy. That got me to reminiscing about my days in 12-step programs. I know I've already discussed - probably in here - the notion, once widely held among authors of recovery-oriented material, that 97% of all American families are dysfunctional. That is what I was reminded of when I saw the title Why Normal Isn't Healthy: the idea that most of us are from dysfunctional families, in desperate... Sign in to see full entry.

Time to breathe a sigh of relief

Fortunately, the storm system that Garfield implicitly talked about in The Secret Life of Cats passed us by, with the exception of a couple of thunderclaps and lots of rain. I don't mind the rain; abundant rain at the right time helps to make those late-summer tomatoes ripe and juicy. (Please pass the salt; I'm hungry just thinking about tomatoes.) But I'm grateful the power didn't go out. I saw some of the radar, and the Chicago area (particularly the southern suburbs) got hit with some nasty... Sign in to see full entry.

Klingons with suitcases

Those of you who have been following the news this morning - in fact, just since my last post at that ungodly hour today - know that British authorities arrested 21 people suspected of developing a plot to take over some airplanes and destroy them. The airplanes they planned on destroying were all supposed to be bound for America. (Trust me - you don't want to be anywhere near either Heathrow or Gatwick in Britain right now.) What these suspected terrorists planned on doing was smuggling aboard... Sign in to see full entry.

The Antichrist has struck again!

Now, normally, I don't like to write about my earnings here on Blogit - many people consider this a private matter, and I respect their opinions. However, today's different. It's very early in the morning here in Chicagoland; I can't sleep because the smoke detector keeps malfunctioning. (I'm going to have to talk to the landlord about that.) Well, my husband got on the computer and accessed Blogit for me. We discovered that my earnings so far this month are - get this - $6.66. Yes, you read... Sign in to see full entry.

Morgellon's syndrome

I first heard of this syndrome last week. When I was waiting for my husband to call back with his debit card number so I could use that to pay our past-due cable-bill balance, I had nothing better to do, so I put on the radio and listened to WGN-AM for a while. The radio hosts at that time of day - two newspaper reporters who bill themselves as The Girlfriends (a name they apply to their fans, male and female alike, as well) - were talking about Morgellon's. Then, I saw two separate references... Sign in to see full entry.

A boring afternoon

I've spent most of my afternoon so far doing research for a future blog entry in From Death Into Life - I plan on doing for Eternal Word Television Network the same thing I did for MTV on August 1. EWTN is going to have a 25th anniversary of its own coming up on August 15 of this year, the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It's also the anniversary of its founder's entrance into the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration as a postulant (the first step in becoming a full-fledged... Sign in to see full entry.

Losing weight with God

I just found an article on Beliefnet about how a man lost weight by beseeching God for help. (The full text of that article may be found here. This article is several pages long. The link I provided merely links to the first page of the article.) I've read this article in its entirety. I admit that at first, I was hoping that this author would take a traditional Christian, Jewish or Muslim approach, defining God in a clear way, and using the doctrines of one of the monotheistic religions to help... Will someone please read all of my blogs already?

I just got a comment asking who Cardinal George was. If that commentator had read all or many of my blogs - especially this one and From Death Into Life - he would not have left that comment. He would, instead, have found out just who Cardinal George is, and would have done so without wasting his time (he wasted it by leaving the comment instead of doing his homework first), or mine (which I had to waste reading and responding to his comment). Folks, please - do your homework first. Read through... Sign in to see full entry.

Cardinal George

I haven't put an update on Cardinal George in here for some time. Over the weekend, he developed blood in his - ahem - stool. This scared the doctors very much; he authorized them finally to tell the public that they used a segment of bowel as a urinary-bladder replacement of sorts, and they wanted to check the connections in his bowels to make sure there were no leaking blood vessels. When they took a flexible sigmoidoscope ("flexible sig" in medical slang) to the appropriate section of bowel,... Sign in to see full entry.

Codependency

I've been going through my books the past few days, with the assistance of my husband, trying to weed out those books I'm no longer reading so I can sell them and earn us some extra money, at least temporarily. (Besides, the extra room on the bookshelves looks nice!) One of the books I dug up during this process is called Women, Sex and Addiction, written by Charlotte Davis Kasl, PhD, a clinical psychologist and overt New Ager. It is essentially the only book of its kind I've ever seen, written... Sign in to see full entry.
