I decided to post these comments in here because they are not specifically about Catholicism, but about Protestant sources of health care. Here in Chicagoland, we have two faith-based health care systems - the Adventist system and Advocate Health. Readers should be widely familiar with the Seventh-Day Adventists; the two big distinctives of this denomination are its insistence on Saturday worship and its heavy involvement in the health-care industry. It started out with many members being... Sign in to see full entry.

What could men do?
I've been focusing on women during my last couple of entries. Now, I'd like to focus on men. The workplace is set up largely by men, for men, in the sense that men have traditionally been expected to pour all their energies into their work at the expense of their families. In medicine, it's not at all unusual to see residents (who used to be mostly male up until recently, and still are mostly male in some specialties) work unholy hours every week - well over one hundred hours. This is considered... Sign in to see full entry.
Do we truly have more power nowadays?
This is a continuation of sorts of my earlier post. The question I pose in the title is a legitimate one: Do we truly have more power now than we did before the feminist movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s happened? Well, it depends on your circumstances. Women like me actually have less power than we did when such things as divorce laws were stricter. I listed one way we have less power in my last post. We no longer have the power to make men commit to us permanently. Trust me on this... Sign in to see full entry.
Ladies Against Feminism
I've been surfing the Ladies Against Feminism site the past couple of days, and I find myself enjoying what I read on that site. I find most of the articles I've read well-written and well-thought-out. Yes, there are people who will disagree with what is written on this site. The women who write for this site make no secret of their disagreements with various aspects of radical feminism in particular. In fact, that's why I feel they selected the name Ladies Against Feminism for their website... Sign in to see full entry.
Elvis lives!
Alert readers are aware that this week, the anniversary of Elvis Presley's death happened. (I believe the anniversary was on the 16th.) Morbidly obese at the time of his death, his talent had deteriorated badly, to the point at which he was forgetting lyrics during his later concerts, slurring those lyrics while singing, and so forth. He was found dead in one of the bathrooms of his Graceland mansion by his live-in lover Ginger Alden. An autopsy later showed that Presley died essentially of a... Sign in to see full entry.
Not THAT again!
My husband is thoroughly sick of JonBenet Ramsey coverage. He and my daughter are thoroughly convinced that the only reason this case gets continued attention is that JonBenet was white, blonde and from an affluent family - and she was a child beauty queen. We have had two little children missing in the Chicago area for several years; my husband is convinced that the only reason this case has not gone national is that the girls are black. They haven't even received much local media coverage... Sign in to see full entry.

More on modest apparel - I hit the jackpot!
Since I've written several articles on the way women in certain Protestant communities dress (they're in From Death Into Life), I thought I'd better put my money where my mouth is and surf around looking for modest outergarments that didn't look like they came from Mars or some strange cult group. Well, I think I finally found a site worthy of consideration. The name of the purveyor of modest clothing is Hannah Lise, and I'm particularly impressed with their line of skirts and tops. They sell... Sign in to see full entry.
Wake me up when the war's over
Today has been a remarkably productive day, as anyone who reads this blog regularly can see. I just hope that I get some unique page views this afternoon. (Yes, I need the money, folks. I enjoy seeing my PayPal account increase substantially every month.) Garfield went back to sleep in front of the fan after she got done dictating her Field Notes to me. Michael has yet to give me his personal dictation for his blog. And, I need more topics to discuss. I think I might just go and veg out for a... Sign in to see full entry.
We are now experiencing technical difficulties
I finally opened the email from the webmistress of Slice of Laodicea. It turns out they really were having technical difficulties; she was getting emails similar to mine from regular commentors at Slice, people who cannot be considered deliberately offensive by any stretch of the imagination. I imagine the tone of those emails was much angrier than was mine. Frankly, this is the result I was secretly hoping for, without quite realizing it. I didn't particularly want to be chewed out for... Sign in to see full entry.
Sixteen kids! How do they cope?
The Discovery Health Channel has been running a series of three programs on the Duggar family, consisting of mom Michelle, dad Jim Bob, and sixteen children. (The latest addition, nearly a year old as of this coming October, is little Johanna Faith. All the children's first names begin with J - even Jinger, pronounced "Ginger.") The Duggars live a frugal, debt-free lifestyle. However, I have to confess that I have at least one concern: How do the Duggars support themselves? Even the most frugal,... Sign in to see full entry.
