Bhoomi Pooja: A Ground Breaking Ceremony

Yesterday we had a ground breaking ceremony in my sister and brother-in-law’s house in the hills. They are preparing to start construction on the land above their present home. There is an old construction (in a hill style with mud, wood and tin), which will come down and parts of it will be reused... Sign in to see full entry.

A Trip to the Nursery

Any trip to the hills is incomplete without a trip to the nursery, Plantiss, a 35 minutes drive from Shyamkhet, where my sister and brother in law’s house is. This trip is no different. At breakfast Jasbir mentioned we ought to drive down there and get some plants. We also needed vegetables and... Sign in to see full entry.

Julie and Julia – Down the food lane

I first read about the film Julia and Julie in June 2009, several months before the film was released. It was an interview with Nora Ephron, the producer of the film, in the New Yorker. I have been a long time admirer of Ephron, author and later producer of Heartburn (the book and film) onwards. I... Sign in to see full entry.

A Holi Lunch

When my sister Roma called – the day before Holi - to ask what we were doing on Holi, I said ‘nothing’. That’s what we do every year - nothing. There was a time when we did do something – about 20 years ago when we came back to India. Keen to get back into things Indian we met up with some friends... Sign in to see full entry.

Garden of Five Senses

Delhi: Yesterday being a perfect day, I suggested to Gouri - my friend visiting from Bangalore - that we go to the Garden of Five Senses. The last time I was there was almost 5 years ago with family based in Delhi and visiting from other places. It has changed, and the original spirit of it so... Sign in to see full entry.

The Crafts Museum, Delhi

One of my more favourite places in Delhi is the Crafts Museum. Its a museum that is devoted mostly to folk art (also my favourite kind of art). Started about 30 years ago as an outdoor art museum it offers a rich and pleasurable collection of folk art from various places in the country. It also... Sign in to see full entry.

A guest in my right eye

Last week, in the middle of the day, a floater appeared in my right eye. It swam up and down, side to side, as my eyeballs moved. What a trial! I called the optometrist the next day and got an appointment. But, I couldn’t make it, so went the next day. With atropine in my eye, it was determined that... Sign in to see full entry.

The Comfort of Comforters

Every night I get into bed, I give thanks. Thanks to the people that made the bed frame, the mattress, the mattress pad, the comforter and the pillow. Without them, the cold winter nights in Delhi would be very difficult. Slipping into bed and pulling the covers over me, I have this sense of peace... Sign in to see full entry.

A yogic career

My first yoga lesson, in a disciplined way, was in the early 1970s, when I was my early 20s. Every morning, in the winter fog, my sister Saroj and I would get into her car and drive off to an ashram in Gol Dak khana, in Delhi. The ashram belonged to a Guru who was very close to Mrs Gandhi at that... Sign in to see full entry.
