By itself, it's an interesting sounding word. But I am referring to James Thurber. I have been reading one of his books, the one titled: LET YOUR MIND ALONE. It was first published in 1935, when Thurber was in his 40s, and seems to have been inspired by inspirational works of other people. When I say inspirational, I mean not in a spiritual, but in a self-improvement sense. He doesn't hold with honing the "streamlined mind" or striving for "mental efficiency." His responses to each of a Mrs.... Sign in to see full entry.

The storms are coming
The news yesterday, and again today, is tracking huge tornadoes, and I can't help but wonder, is this kind of storm warning and coverage going to be the norm in coming years? They talk about going to 'safe rooms' as if everyone has such a room: in years to come, they will. We will. This is just the planet doing what it does. This is one of those things bigger than us, or anything we can do to control it. Is it global climate change? Who cares? Who cares, why, or whose fault... When the world... Sign in to see full entry.

Wonderful new product!
Kleenex Cool Touch tissues... they really are cool to the touch, which they say is nice for a hot, unhappy nose. I don't know how they do it, but they really are quite refreshingly cool. I am not going to waste these on my nose. I have a better idea. When it gets really hot in the coming summer, I will drape these cool tissues over my whole head... in fact, I will sit in the middle of the room, completely covered... looking like an igloo! And so nice and cool! Sign in to see full entry.

Doesn't incompetence just make you crazy?
Do we really, as it seems, have more incompetence to cope with from people who are supposed to be capable and knowledgeable, within the requirements of their job? I read history, and historical novels well-founded in history, and so I know there have always been the lazy, the greedy, the mean-spirited and thus, the incompetent, and I suspect it actually isn't worse now. Except... people are not learning, as students, the basics of speaking their own language properly, nor how to learn with... Sign in to see full entry.

Kia found in a Chevy...
Kia is a little 12-week old schnauzer/terrier who got, somehow, locked in a car and then impounded. Kia spent nearly a month, it appears, living on scraps from fast-food trash in the car, and (euch!) old cigars. What did she drink? I am guessing she licked condensation off the glass. Finally, a worker at the impound lot saw her, and the rescue was on. So many questions! I am looking forward to reading some answers. In the meantime, reading comments made by people who read the same article, and... Sign in to see full entry.

Stop, I tell you! No more!
it comes in the mailbox, it comes in the email, tons of unwanted junk mail/spam... I have to pay to have the real stuff carted off, who can imagine how many pounds a year on the garbage truck? (I wonder if they are in cahoots with the post office, somehow...) And email... I go down the page, tossing, tossing, tossing to the garbage file. Some, I know where they came from, and why they come incessantly, until I actually open one and find the tiny print where they tell you to undo your... Sign in to see full entry.

Are they trying to win some sort of contest?
It seems nearly every day, there is another report in the news--no pun intended--about a shooting, accidental or deliberate, premeditated or not... Today's entry: Five-year old boy accidentally kills two-year old sister with "My First Rifle" that he got as a gift. Mom went out of the room for a few minutes, and that was that. How many layers of stupid can you count here? Sign in to see full entry.

Comes a day, you realize, you no longer need to worry about dying young...
I think many of us in the Blogit Community are in that category, or soon will be. When I was young, I didn't think about being old. I didn't want to know about it much, and I grew up without the richness of example that some families have. It is only now, and here that I am learning some very important things. That an aging body still carries a lively mind, inspiration and creativity. That passion does not pass away when we reach a certain age, though it may lean on nostalgia heavily. That love... Defense of Marriage
The question of who can marry whom is another of those volatile questions in these times, where religion attempts to define and dictate reality for everyone. It smacks of an unseparate Church and State, I say, and of ignorance, even willful ignorance. A good look around this world we all share, at all the great variety of culture and human systems, demonstrates how many different 'right ways' there are to do things, to define them and live with them. "One Man + One Woman" is only one formula for... Sign in to see full entry.

Faster, shinier, newer...! vs tea and biscuits
Many of us here are of an age where constant change, constant upgrade, improvement and new looks is all that desireable. Maybe it isn't age, so much as attitude. I, for one, would like my email system to remain constant, as long as it works perfectly well. I am glad for my browser to behave in familiar ways. I don't want a phone that does much more than handle phone calls. I don't need to electronicize my map reading, I don't need to have constant and continual electronic entertainment. I would...
