Re: TAPS,

It's a madness, this notion that guns solve problems. Hardly anyone in America has the kind of problems guns are good for solving. Very few of us have to hunt to eat.

Guns are cheap and brutal power, and everyone knows, power corrupts.

There was noise--bang, bang, noise in our neck of the woods today.  Half-way between our place and the place of Son #3, right on the main drag, a man with guns opened fire out of his house, and in his house (don't know why).  The police surrounded with their guns and shot him to death.  I hate guns, and yet, there is one in my place.  Son #1 has his grandfather's shotgun hidden in his room.  I hope he never decides to use it for anything.

Re: swordfingers,

I appreciate your reading and commenting, and I totally understand about not wanting to be involved in politics... who needs that feeling of utter powerlessness, just like when we trusted Mommy and Daddy to make the decisions?

Voting, yes... speaking out, yes... risking the ire of the lunatics, sure.

Age, hopefully, increases the value of one person's opinion by several degrees of common sense.

And our being scared gives them that much more power.

nautikos is absolutely right... it is idiotic to not involve oneself in public policy... i only vote during presidential elections but i do pray, pray, pray... certainly that should count for something... as the younger (also deceased) john kennedy said in his magazine George, "everything is politics." guess that makes me kosher though i've always felt that i'd get involved on the political level when i grow up... i'm 52, i think it's about time i say and do something and vote in ALL the elections. thanks for your post. i agree with you and its got me thinking.

Re: Re: Re: Kabu,

Conscience is the spirit speaking... saying, "Don't be so afraid..."

Most of the stuff humans do that is hurtful and destructive comes down to fear, and fear comes down to survival,  however otherwise it may be dressed up. Animals have less choice about that than humans.  We aren't better than animals in that way, but we have the potential to be.

Re: JimmyA,

To open our eyes is another way of saying that we don't act until we ourselves feel the nearness of the impact of a disaster.  Until that moment, someone else can deal with it.

Re: Kabu,

You'd be the one to know if the ex fits the profile!

Honestly, we are simply no nicer than other animals who live their daily lives in Jurassic Park.  But we have made our safe zone, so all those ecological niches are filled by ourselves.

The problem with some of these actions and atrocities, at least to me, is that it seem to take an atrocity to open people's eyes! Usually, they don't see the dangers or the errors of their ways until well after the fact! And it's been like this for years now! I've always thought they should change our country's motto from "In God We Trust" to "Look! The Horses Have Escaped! Close The Barn Doors!" Oops . . . too late!

Re: CCT,

Probably the same as everywhere else: those who like to play with guns, will, and those who don't, won't, and the power will be with those who do, to mess around with making other people do what the ones with the power, want.

I agree Ciel, God knows what would happen here if we were allowed weapons.

Re: Naut,

Humankind never really changes.  We have the same problems, use the same tecniques to solve them, though with more complex technologies.  We are the same blend of emotion and intellect, we are still fear-based bodies, and love-centered spirit, in the perpetual dichotomies, the endless tug-of-war. And throughout the ages, addicts and idiotes abound!

This is the most important part of your post: "Those of us who don't want to see the danger, who just want to live the quiet lives we have created, we are the enablers of these power addicts."

And it reminds me of the fact that in ancient Athens 'idiots' (idiotes) were those citizens who concerned themselves only with their private affairs and did not take part in the political life, the life of the polis...
