Astronomical photos

take certain equipment, starting with a tripod. It's very hard to take a very still shot of subjects at astronomical distances in doubtful lighing, with a hand-held camera. I did try. It was too beautiful not to try, and I knew you'd like to see them, if they were any good at all. Well.... Let's just call the moon shots... artsy. http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ Here are also some of the 'silvery' tree shots. If you look closely, you may see the effect on the branches, of that... Sign in to see full entry.

The air is silver...

With all the leaves blown away, and the skies going cloudy, the sunlight is thin and colorless today. The house is bright with it, but though the temperatures are mild, it looks cool. It's dull, the dead back yard and bare trees, but the day will come not so long from now when the air will be deeper grey during the day, while snow falls, and the world will seem muffled both in sound and sight. When it's done falling, though, and the sun comes out, it will be a brilliant, even blinding white, and... Sign in to see full entry.

Autumn skies and the mountain

Last night-- The sky was clear as clear, a deep sapphire blue passing into a velvety midnight blue. The new crescent moon and Venus were brilliant, slowly crossing the southern fields of the sky, finally descending over Pike's Peak, so beautiful, I had to go out several times to admire them. Comet ISON will be appearing one of these nights, somewhere in the sky just after sunset or just before dawn. Well, may be appearing. It's passage 'round the sun might break it up, so we get no great show... Sign in to see full entry.

Welcome to the Reptile House

If you are creeped out by snakes, you might not like these images so much. But I am fascinated by the beauty of their patterns and colors, and the cool, sleek feel of them. At least, the ones that don't bite. And then there's the skink. The Blue-tongued skink. This one, a female, has the loveliest scales arranged in beautiful, flexible patterns. Her color is lustrous like pearls. The African fat-tailed gecko is just the opposite: it's skin is dark, velvety and nubbley-looking. Chinese... Sign in to see full entry.

Kritter Karavan

I went yesterday to the home of one of the knittin' women. She is the one who brought the hedgehog to the group, of which there have been pictures, now a little ways down my photostream on Flickr. She has other animals at home, and let me come and take a few pictures. How many animals does she have in her home? I hear someone ask... Well, counting the insects as colonies, rather than individuals, she has 75 reptiles, mammals, spiders and insects, and amphibians. I am not sure she included the... Sign in to see full entry.

Sooner or later, it was gonna happen...

Madame LaD broke a very important rule: Do NOT eat the screen door! Yes, she got her busy little teeth into it, and the hole appeared so fast! I noticed almost as fast. This is not acceptible, holes in the screen door, especially holes big enough for her to get through, and into the house. So, I shot her. Pointblank, with a squirt gun. She leaped away, and started grooming away the wetness from her belly-fur.' A few moments later, she was dancing on the screen again, and I was there, squirter in... Sign in to see full entry.

Breakfast can be a problem.

Standard breakfast fare is not the best for people in certain delicate conditions. Fats and carbs are not so great for a diabetic, and I hate starting the day feeling like I've blown it with the first meal. Starting with coffee, also not a good plan, which is a problem because when first out of bed, wobbly between the ears, not at my imaginative best, that's the one thing I know I want. And naturally, much depends on what's in the pantry and fridge. Carbs are needed, of course, by the body.... Sign in to see full entry.

more pictures up

It's been a busy day! there are some new shots of Violetta and of the maple, and what's left of its leaves. The usual link gets there, same as previous post. Sign in to see full entry.

Pictures morning

It's another lovely day, clear and sunny, the mountain has its dusting of snow, and the leaves have gone just enough so that I can glimpse Garden of the Gods again. There is a squirrel's nest, too, the only leaves left in one particular tree. I wonder if it is the country home of Mdm LaDarque. I tried sunlight to light the baskets I've been working on this week. Too much of a good thing, I had to get them in shadow--but those images are available now, if you want to see. Plus a few... Sign in to see full entry.

Halloween pictures!

The last day of October, windy and chilly but more sunny than not... The golden leaves have been dancing on air, past my window all afternoon. The maple tree is lighter by a few pounds of leaves, though there are still enough to fill another strong wind. Charlie is to credit or blame for the spookifying of the house and yard. http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ Sign in to see full entry.
