A room full of straw to be spun into gold...

A room full of boxes to be opened, contents distributed throughout the house... spun into home. Some things I am delighted to create new places for. There's a very nice collection of history books, including the 11 volumes of Ariel and Will Durant's THE STORY OF CIVILIZATION, got a few years ago at a thrift shop. There is one of the best books about Elizabeth I, by Elizabeth Jenkins ELIZABETH THE GREAT. Next to it, LETTERS OF THE QUEENS OF ENGLAND 1100-1547, and THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF HENRY THE... Home

We got in late last night, near 11:30, after about a 14-hour drive. We had to stop and get some food and kitty litter before actually landing at home. I was ready to sleep... and then, didnt'. Partly because Violetta missed Charlie when he went out of sight to sleep in his own place. She stood at the front door and called loudly for him. She has eaten and drunk, much more than she did over the past two days, and she has acknowledged the proper usage of the cat box. She has explored, and slept in... Sign in to see full entry.

Travel journal, Day One, The Night

After a reasonably pleasant drive down Washington, along the mighty Columbia River for many miles, then southwest across Oregon and finally into southern Idaho, we spent the night in a town called Bliss. One motel town, two restaurants... being generous there... and to summarize, we would not sleep nor eat here again. You might say, we are Blissed off. The motel owner is a great tightwad, disliking the whole cat idea, charging us extra, and yet desiring us to keep the beast confined in her... Sign in to see full entry.

She doesn't know her whole world is about to change...

Violetta, my 13-year old cat, has been sleeping beside me, by my feet, over my shoulder, tucked under the covers with her head resting on my middle, nearly every night since I got back here. I think she missed one, being comfortable elsewhere and wanting not to be taken for granted. I've missed her companionship all the while and times I've been away, and it's quite clear I am her favorite Warm Spot and Feeder. I acquired her in 2000, answering an ad in the paper. She'd been a barn-kitten,... Sign in to see full entry.

The sun is glowing afternoon gold...

and shining through the spring green leaves, dappling the truck, packed and tarped and netted-over. We will drive off, if all goes to plan, at 8 tomorrow morning, and about 4 or 5 hours later we'll be taking the long slow haul up a three-mile grade south of Pendelton, Oregon. That hill splits the east- and west-bound traffics, and each way has a view point looking out towards western Oregon. The east-bound is not as high as the other, but it is still dramatic. If the air is clear, we'll stop and... Sign in to see full entry.

Packing...

Charlie is an excellent packer: nearly all the truck can hold is in the truck now, and it is looking pretty secure with wedging and bungees and a bungee-net overall. We then went for a drive, going through several tight round-abouts, and nothing fell out, nor did the truck fall over. Very encouraging. So we went to the storage unit, and added two carpets (rolled and wrapped) and a few other useful things, like the truck tire chains. I'd wondered where they were... In fact, there were a number of... Sign in to see full entry.

The Garden On Deck

So, there it is, the deck over the front drive, looking out on the mountains and the street, and I remember how it was when the Neighbors sat there, when it was their deck, and sometimes they were okay, sometimes fighting... but always very visible. Not caring to be so much on show, no matter what I'm up to, I have plans... The plans involve long planters, secured to the edge of the deck that sticks out beyond the railings, a good 10 inches or so, and planted with climbing plants. I'll tie up... Charlie flew in...

yesterday evening, and we all had bison burgers--a relatively healthy and tasty red meat--and enjoyed some TV together, something of a novelty, neither of us owning one, in CoSprings. We surveyed all that is going over the hills to far away, and talked about what else can be fitted into this coming week. We drive out on Friday or Saturday, for what will be, with good fortune and cooperative truck, a two-day drive. It won't be the scenic route which takes us along I-70 from south of Salt Lake... The sun is shining

...through the new leaves of the Indian Plum, a bright, encouraging green. And a bird--after last year, I suspect a Northern Flicker--is pounding on a nearby chimney, while another thumps away on a nice resounding tree a few hundred feet away. Everything is saturated, which is good for the rain forest, where summer will likely be dry and even sometimes hot. Temps now are in the 50s F and moving on towards 60. Come mid-summer, there will by 90s, maybe even top 100, for maybe two weeks, even... Sign in to see full entry.

Another for Kabu

Responding to our Aussie's comment to Jimmy A. in his recent post regarding inappropriate dressing. http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/4948273195/ It was an accidental shot, I just wanted the cockatoo with its crest up--timing is always an issue for me, so I didn't bother to frame carefully, I just snapped the shot, and was annoyed that I'd gotten someone else in the shot... until I actually saw it, and realized it was just possibly my shot of the day.
