new hookery project

I've been trying to think of something to make for gifts besides hats. I came up with little crocheted baskets: penny-baskets, candy baskets, dresser-organizer baskets... They are kinda pretty, and a great way to use up the ends of yarns that went into hats! Maybe I will make one for holding all the small skeins and balls of tail-ends of yarns! If you'd like to see them, I posted a few pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ Sign in to see full entry.

Frost sparkles

and makes the porch railing look decorated for an event. Inside the glass door there is a new garden, and the zonal geraniums I bought for their lovely autumn colors--they were just about all leaf when I got them last week--have come inside and bloomed. I meant them for the deck out front, but looking up and reading the gardening tips for them, realized they could not be outdoor plants in times of frost and freeze. Madame has allowed several of her friends to visit: a smaller black squirrel and... Sign in to see full entry.

I think we might wake to a white morning

It was snowing this afternoon up in the mountains, and the sun, still fairly high, shone through a heavy cloud, thick with snow. Funny thing, on the opposite side of the sky, now, the clouds are broken billows, and the nearly full moon rides along like a ship on the waves. So pretty, so hard to capture with my camera and my level of skill. We were working in the yard earlier, shifting the garden boxes and adding a third one. Charlie spotted, coming from under one of the boards that make the... Sign in to see full entry.

The Birds!

There have been quite a few interesting birds in the neighborhood, and a number of them have found the birdfeeder out front, and the peanuts bar out back... and now I am encouraging them further with a seed cup nailed to the railing, too. Birds are shyer and faster to decamp than squirrels, but I have finally caught on camera the most elusive of them: a Western Bluebird! Blue is such a magical color in nature... flowers and the sky, of course, but few animals wear blue. That makes them always a... Sign in to see full entry.

dancing on air

It's snowing... large flakes, flying around, as much up as down... It probably won't last, probably won't settle and accumulate. Towards the end of January, I won't be so tickled to see it. But for now, it is the first of coming winter and I'm glad of it. The cold will last, probably, and my power bill will go up. and I will get tired of bundling up and wearing the heavy coat and the boots, long before the end of January. In the meantime, it bodes well for the selling of hats. Sign in to see full entry.

Aftermath

The crepes were fine, the spread colorful and delicious! And there was plenty to go around, as, finally, 8 people enjoyed them, and that counts Charlie and me, and my housemate. It was not a lively party, but it was a well-fed one. Clearly, I will have to try this again, until I get it right. I really appreciate the people who say they will come to a party, and really do. It's Crepe Day! (before)

Last week, we--Charlie and I--decided to host a crepe brunch party at my house. He makes really tasty crepes from the recipe we have used for years (3 eggs, 2 cups milk, 1 scant cup flour--vanilla, bit of salt) and I mix up the fillings, sweet and savory, for our guests to create their own perfect crepes. Charlie is a dab hand at making them come out round and even, using the smaller (as opposed to smallest) of my Revereware fry pans. Fillings today will include breakfast sausage crumbles,honey... The sky is blue...

the clouds are high and misty, and there is a new veil of snow on the mountains, mostly but not wholly above tree-line. The wind blew gusty and strong all night. I got up once to make sure the deck chairs were still there. They were, and are, as the winds keep up their gusty selves even now. Here's a shout-out for another of our photographers: TAPS has started her own photostream on Flickr! http://www.flickr.com/photos/86525696@N07/ I have a few new ones, a series I'm calling The Silver Lining,... Well, it's leftovers for lunch...

Leftovers from last night's dinner at the Bonefish Grill, a birthday gift from my middle-kid, the daughter who dances with dogs. I had pecan and parmesan crusted rainbow trout, very tasty! Charlie had the wood-grilled swordfish. We both liked the tastes of each other's dish so much, we traded a fair bit. But next time, I will order the swordfish! I just reheated the remainder of the trout, and had it with a bit of balsamic mayonaise. There were leftovers partly so we'd have room for dessert. He... Sign in to see full entry.

61+ a day: I danced

I've never been one for dancing where anyone could see me. Not the wild, throw-your-body-into-it kind of dancing. I left my center of gravity back in the high school gym class, and getting sneered at has always been a deep dread. Somehow, I went from inventing moves on the rings on the swing set at the park, to being a spectator to other people's moves. Well, I know how. But I'm not going there today. Charlie asked if I wanted to come to some sort of drumming event at the school, and I got the... Sign in to see full entry.
