Last Days in England

Last day in England... I came to soak up history and scenery and... just being here. I came to spend quality time with my middle-kid and her husband, and to get better acquainted with relatives in the area. I came for things I've wanted to make real for 50 years, and for surprises I never knew of. Well, these things have all been accomplished. And I am tantalized by all the things I haven't seen or done or walked around in... Yesterday we had another drive over the Ribble countryside and shared... Sign in to see full entry.

Oxfordshire journey

Saturday was a delight, not planned far in advance, nor even expected when this trip began, but as things happened, meeting up became the open door. My most gracious and generous host invited me in and let me wander around the place he lives, garden and all. He fed me and told me stories and listened to mine, and showed me the countryside, flying over it like a couple of birds... Sometimes, meeting someone from a world quite different from your own, you wonder if different habits of being will... Sign in to see full entry.

Oxford Weekend

Tomorrow morning very very early, we will drive to Oxfordshire. Just a few miles from Oxford itself, my daughter will be attending a seminar with her pup, Ripley. I will have Saturday and Sunday to explore. Saturday is expected to be a fine day, and that suggests outdoorsy explorations. I'm not sure specifically where, though there will be at least one garden in it where I expect to find a gnome or two. Sunday, when They say there will be water falling from the skies, it will possibly be an... Sign in to see full entry.

The Tolkien Trail photos...

are up on flickr finally. Usually, I put them up in the order I want to share them, which is to say, most recent at the top of the photostream, and meant to be viewed from downstream where the current selection starts. This time, the top of the stream shows the first ones taken which for reasons unknown did not want to load the first time around. But the trail is a loop, after all, so does it really matter? Not so much, this time. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/807w5u...plus, some pretty... Sign in to see full entry.

Doh...!

We walked a stretch of the Tolkien Trail yesterday. It was lovely and there will be pictures, and once again, my luck proved true: When I went tumbling face-first down a bank above the River Hodder, nothing got devastatingly damaged, and greatest most unlikely luck of all, I did not land face-first in a patch of nettles! Considering that nettles grow rampant just about on every piece of green ground around here, that was truly lucky! Luckily, also, there were no horses to a-fright by my no-doubt... a pleasant enough morning...

Clouds like a crowd of sheep, patches of bright green where sunlight gets through to the ground... Across the valley can be seen the turrets of Stonyhurst College, Tolkien's old stomping ground, and there we plan to go stomping, ourselves, later this morning. The Tolkien Walk is a loop footpath that starts and finishes in Hurst Green. I don't know if we will do the entire walk--about 5 miles, I think--or just through the woods, by some stately architecture near the River Hodder, and to the... Sign in to see full entry.

Old story, new story

I mentioned being inspired to return to an old story idea. In fact, I wrote some pages--long-hand in those days--and thought them pretty good, actually, and when they'd been lost... well, you know how it is with lost writing: It is the best you ever did and you'll never be able to recreate it again... I like to think, however, that in the past 30 or 40 years, I've grown into a better writer, and the idea of going back to those scenes and dialogues is not so daunting. In fact, there now exists a... Gisburn Forest

https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/hL5Qn0 A walk in the woods on a damp and misty day... This feeds fuel to a long-ago story I began to write, and stopped because my character was walking across England, and I had no idea what she'd experience. Since walking in this shadowed wood, I find her wandering around my mind again, and my mind sorting out little problems the tale needs solved... More on this later. Sign in to see full entry.

We didn't make it...

...all the way to Giggleswick. We didn't even get as far as Wigglesworth. We got distracted along the way, wanting to walk in some old forest. The road to those little villages runs through the Forest of Bowland, and Gisburn Forest where there are many paths and bike trails. And photo-ops... The latest up on FAA are from that field trip, and more will be going up on flickr in a little while. http://cl-redding.artistwebsites.com/ Sign in to see full entry.
