Driving snow

I did drive Charlie out to the game site after all. The afternoon never got above the 20s, and when we left the house around 3:30, a few flakes were flying in the air. By the time we reached Elbert Road, the last 18-mile stretch before the camp, snow was blowing across the pavement and fog was getting thick. Mostly, until the last few miles, though, the pavement was clear. Cattle still grazed in the fields alongside the road, and there sides were frosted with snow. What really blew me away was... Soooo cold today!

The sun is shining through the back door, and Caliban is a happy apple-green in his fog-misted habitat. I'm happy because I discovered why the guest room is always cold: th e vent in the ceiling has been closed! So I climbed up and thumbed it open, without killing myself with another tumble. Charlie wants to go out to the camp a day ahead of the Alliance LARP weekend, getting together with the set-up team, but I'm hoping they'll postpone, it is so cold! The drive out there also gives me some... Sign in to see full entry.

Wednesday weather and stuff

Cold is blowing in on gusty winds this morning, snow expected later, and temps down from near 60 yesterday to the teens today, negatives with wind chill tonight. We'll be back in the 50s on Saturday. Now, due to one thing or another, the wifi is down. Wind is a likely culprit. Since I piggyback on the wifi account next door, there is nothing for me to do about except wait. At least I can write here until the internet is again accessible. And here it is, back again... It has been back a while,... Sign in to see full entry.

Housekeeping in Caliban's den

Here comes the sun...! It is predicted to reach mid-50s F this afternoon! Lots of running around yesterday, shopping for groceries, fabrics, hardware, and some new plants for Caliban's den. Groceries come with consequences. After a tiring day, it is too tempting to indulge in things my mouth wanted just when my will to choose wisely is at its weakest. Consequently, my blood-sugar reading is high this morning, well over the 150 mark that's the top end of the goal, but still well below 200. Today... Sign in to see full entry.

Changes in the air, the weather, the pets, the plans.

Sunny and cold today, and though it will be warmer tomorrow, Charlie has cancelled his going to the jugger tournament, not because of the weather, but because he has a sick kitty who could need him home over the weekend. Just when I had gotten over worrying about the drive... and was feeling envious of 70s F in Phoenix this weekend. Instead, he'll (we'll) be taking Astrid in tomorrow at 10 to see if she's improved since the first visit. They aren't sure what's wrong, and the tests to determine... Sign in to see full entry.

Winter storm!

When I hear "storm!" I think of mighty winds and blinding snow or rain or pitch-forks-and-hammer-handles... But all night the snow here has been falling gently, silently down, piling up the inches, making no fuss, yet closing schools and breaking appointments and delaying shopping. It is quiet, and it is persistant. This morning we are getting a bit of wind with it, and the forecast suggests there will be getting stronger winds through today, and that the snow will continue through mid... Saturday up'n'attems

The sky is brightening in the east as the waning moon dips down behind the mountain horizon to the west. It's cold now, but we're looking forward to temps near 60 this afternoon! Yesterday the grandkids 'met' Caliban via a Portal call. They found him very fascinating, especially when he moved oh so slowly, proving he's actually alive! It's tricky, keeping his habitat properly humid. The fogger I got the other day is effective for a while, but needs refilling too often to be practical. I might... Sign in to see full entry.

Wednesday's looking good!

Sun is bright, and Caliban is in his usual morning corner doing his full-belly salute to the warmth. Yesterday I bought a fogger that emits a stream of humidity to bring the habitat to a more tropical atmosphere. Jackson's chameleons are native to tropical mountains of Kenya and Tanzania, so are most comfortable in a climate that's moist and has a pretty wide temperature range. This morning before the sun rose I found Caliban on a branch having a mist-bath on the branch above the fog stream.... Sign in to see full entry.

Gardens and their inhabitants

Once again, cold but sunny this morning, and a moderately cold week until Saturday when temps might get into the 50s. This morning I am baking artichokes and dirt. The artichokes are foil-wrapped, and the dirt is nothing to do with them. I read recently about the unwisdom of recycling the soil from potted plants without making sure it is free of organic intruders, like bugs, which could harm the new plantings. For this reason, I am baking the soil from several pots to sterilize it in preparation... Sign in to see full entry.

Nameless...

Still Nameless, but gathering many suggestions... My grandkid Elsa offers Comma Comma Chameleon. A friend here proposed The Lizard of Oz. CCT suggested Muncher which reminds me of Baron Munchausen. The thing is, this is such an unlikely beastie, with 3 horns, eyes that roll about independently, a tongue hinged in the front, a prehensile tail, bifurcated paws... and he changes hues according to his feelings. Like the platypus, he is just so... varied in all his bits! So I am looking for a name... Sign in to see full entry.
