Change of plans

The plan was to take the aforementioned chest to our storage space this morning, then take Rob, the muscles of the plan, to his job as a mark of appreciation. Looking out at the 3 inches of snow on the top of the truck (and the chest in its swathing of tarp) and sighed and got dressed. Rob would have to leave at 9 to catch his bus, walking a half mile or so in the snow, still snowing, and temps barely above 0 F, so I was still ready to carry out the plan, slowly and carefully in the heatless but... I thought I'd seen the last of him...

...for a month, anyway. A couple of days ago, I left Charlie in Denver to participate for a week in Bill Pullman's THE WILD HUNT project, and realized as he got out of the truck that he will be done the Saturday evening, and I am heading out Saturday afternoon. So, here I am ready to get ready for my trip undistracted. Then yesterday evening, he called to ask if he should buy the large item he found at the thrift store up there. The real question was, will I come and pick it up? If I wouldn't,... Sign in to see full entry.

Murray Ross 1942-2017

Not a name you've probably heard... Murray Ross and his wife Betty Ross founded Theaterworks in 1976 and he has been its Artistic Director ever since. He passed away this morning. Murray has been one of Charlie's greatest mentors and friends in theater at UCCS for the past ~7 years. Here is what Charlie wrote this afternoon: A luminary has passed from the world. So many owe so much to his teaching, his knowledge, his weirdness, his artistry and dedication to the uncounted worlds of the theatre.... Sign in to see full entry.

Perspective

Some days it's hard to find the urge to write. I check in here just about daily to read, but words just don't come to the tap, there is nothing flowing. Or maybe I am too deep in isolation-mode to reach out. There are those days. Some days, I just don't much want to write about what has grabbed my attention because I know some people really won't appreciate my thoughts on the matter. Here is one that came up today:... New Year's Eve 2016

The day dawns quietly, all rosy and gold across the landscape, and the air is still and cold. Baroque music plays gently on the radio, and there is the sound of moving water from the fish pond by the front door, the soft sound of the heating bringing the house up to warm enough. The radio is on Colorado Public Radio, one of the two classical stations here in the Springs. The signal gets a bit fuzzy sometimes, but that is better than Fred. The other station has way too much Fred. Fred is always... Sign in to see full entry.

Auctions pickup day

Just back from another drive to Denver area to pick up auction wins. I am going to have to stop looking at that site... Or maybe only once a month, or something... once the ones I'm currently following finish... Today it was for a pretty little antique brooch/pendant with a piece of malachite set in silver filigree, and a double-sided makeup mirror which was larger and heavier than I expected. That was one pickup location. The other was a couple of framed Carmen posters--the opera, not... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunny, windy, icy Christmas!

Plans change... Yesterday the lunch array was so loaded with tasty things, we actually had no time or room for the great dinner we'd planned. So we told everyone, Come by tomorrow afternoon and we'll do the Christmas feast on Christmas after all! And everyone thought that would be a great idea! Around sometime AM, the wind came up, and it brought new cold to freeze the damp of yesterday's and last night's warmer temps into a sheet of ice: When I went out the front door, the wind yanked the door... Christmas Eve

The sky is beginning to go light... When I woke at 5:30, there was a deep blue sky with a bright crescent moon high in the southwest. A sight like that, of simple, sweet, sublime beauty makes waking early worth any longing to sleep until 7 or 9. Today we feast. I just have to make the feast, first. One feature will be canned peach and apricot and pear halves sprinkled with a bit of nutmeg or cinnamon or cloves, dabbed with a bit of butter, and broiled for a few minutes to brown them just a bit.... Promises and expectations

I said that the decorations would be put up overnight by elves. Which is to say, Charlie said he'd do the deed during the night while I slept. I went to bed like a kid waiting for Santa; for once, I wanted to let other hands take on this happy task not so I didn't have to, but for the sake of waking to a surprise of loveliness and Christmas magic. Well, I slept poorly, and left the door ajar so Embers could come and go at will. I was up again at 2, and read a while, turned out the lights...... Sign in to see full entry.
