Back from the vet...

and Our Embers is scheduled for surgery Jan 10 to have the troublesome teeth removed. The steroid shot she got today will tide her over until then. And today, she got a rear-nails trim for which her many human friends and perches will be grateful. Good news, anyway, that the vet has a 10% off sale in January. That could save me ~$100. Charlie is still looking for another housemate. He had an interview lined up with young woman, a student, but her parents freaked out over the notion of her moving... Sign in to see full entry.

Music and memories in the morning

Usually, my Echo dot device plays 'ambient sounds for sleep' which is to say, nature's gentle noises: crickets, softly flowing water, distant storm or waves, birds... It loops along forever because... well, I like those sounds! But this morning I ordered up something else: I said, "Alexa, play James Galway." If you don't know the name, he is the Irishman who plays upon a gold flute, everything from classical to pop classics, jazz, and stuff I don't know how to name. Today it started with the... Bring on the clowns!

Every year since Charlie took the Clowning and Physical Comedy class, I've had the pleasure of going to the annual Clown Showcase that is the class recital. This year's was tonight. As ever, it was a great entertainment! Every year, it is a totally different thing: The style, the costuming, the skits and sketches are all different, reflecting current events and concerns or just raising silliness to an art form. The only thing the same is the shiny red nose that makes a clown--a clown! Clowns in... Sign in to see full entry.

Could have been worse...

Charlie has been anxious to find a new housemate before rent is due again. He talked to a guy by phone and made it really easy for the guy to take the room. The guy told him that no, he doesn't smoke nor drink, among other reassurances. He arranged to come for a face-to-face meeting, but Charlie had pretty much already decided. The guy had only a couple of bags of belongings, and was ready to move right in. There was a gap of silence, when he didn't contact Charlie, then was back in touch and... Sign in to see full entry.

Walking to work, walking for joy

Charlie is off at his first work-day of a regular part-time job. He is the groundsman at the place we have our storage unit, and will be paid a couple of dollars better than minimum wage for up to 20 hours/week. This is ideal for him, enough to pay his rent and his bills, and it is also within reasonable walking distance for a guy who likes walking. Charlie has always liked to walk, and used to walk to high school every day, a couple of miles, even in inclement weather. A driver once stopped to... Sign in to see full entry.

mmm... oatmeal!

I like oatmeal. But recently, ordering oatmeal in a restaurant, it became clear why some people despise the stuff, find it disgusting and inedible. It was slimy, it was beyond slimy. That overwhelmed any flavor or other quality. It was more like glue than food. At home, I make quick, not instant, oatmeal, and it is steel-cut rather than rolled oats. I add things like dried fruit--not always raisins! And, today for instance, I added apple cider to the water, and some cinnamon. Often, I throw in... Sign in to see full entry.

here we go again!

Yesterday I picked up an auction win... a large Victorian dollhouse. It, like the other two I have in the works, needs restoration: Last night, I stripped out the old loose wall papers and 'carpets' which were stick-down flocked paper. I am using a mini-sander to smooth off the last of the sticky residues, then will lay some new flooring, probably at least one floor of 'hardwood' which is to say, walnut-stained craft sticks, like coffee stirrers, but sturdier. The odd nooks of the floor shapes... Sign in to see full entry.

Post Thanksgiving culinary madness

The sun's coming up on another November day in the Springs with temps near freezing that will be in the 60s later today. Charlie and I were invited to the home of one of his friend's family, where the company was good and the food was plenty, and we were sent home with some leftovers... But yesterday, we realized we had not turkeyed near enough. So we went to the grocery store--the only store, we figured, not filled with Black Friday shoppers--and acquired our own turkey and some green vegies.... Sign in to see full entry.
