School bus days

It is just past 7:30, the sun is up and it just now was glowing off the local school bus that passes by this corner five days a week, twice a day. I caught a glimpse of it, and that was enough to get me remembering... It wasn't until we moved to New Jersey that the school bus became part of my experience. In New York, we'd been only a mile from the school and walked it every day, even once in a hurricane that had blown a tree down across the road from our house. When I was an adult and went back... The Serpent and The Saint

I have been meaning to set this idea into words for several years, and finally, today, here is a first draught. A merry Saint Patrick's Day to all who celebrate, Irish or not. THE SERPENT AND THE SAINT The day was brilliant, the sky and sea their different blues, the lands bright green under the sun, and rich brown where crops would soon be growing. But the Saint, sitting high on the tor above the landscape, saw nothing of the loveliness, and there was a morose look upon him. Beside him was his... Sign in to see full entry.

Up at dawn

Yesterday there was little wind, and no more snow, and temps never got above freezing. This morning as the world lightens up and sunshine will be the order of the day, we look for temps in the 40sF. Right now, though, I hear great crunchings of every vehicle that goes slowly, cautiously past the house. On Facebook yesterday was video of driving along one of the main roads out into the flatlands east of the Springs, and the roadway was simply full of stranded, abandoned cars. Not just the road,... Another day at home

The winds have died down to a ho-hum breeziness, and the street is white, as ours tends to remain where the city does nothing for it. I will likely stay off them until tomorrow. My immunizations are scheduled for next week some time, Charlie's for the 20th at County Health Department. Mine, being recommended by my healthcare, will be free. And Kaiser says they don't recommend the typhus shot for going to Beijing. That saves ~$100, if Charlie opts out of that one at County Health. Yesterday I... Sign in to see full entry.

Photos I would love to have been there to take...

early afternoon addendum to the earlier post

The power is still on, the game hens and artichokes are out of the oven, and I have turned up the heat in case the power does go for a lengthy time: the house will stay warm a while longer if it's too hot now. I will have warm food to eat, and the freezer will remain closed to conserve its icy climate. There are several inches of snow collected where the wind doesn't get at it. And there's another power flicker... At least if it does go, this pc has a fully charged battery, and is on power saver... Sign in to see full entry.

I was gonna go out...

Waking late today, around 10am, I looked outside and saw snow blowing at a sideways angle, but the road was merely wet. Great! I can go out and get Ember's meds refill... took a shower, got breakfast together, looked outside again... Nope. Not driving anywhere today. Today I will do some kitchening... got a couple of game hens and some artichokes in the oven already, reheated soup from yesterday... aromas and good food perfect for this blowing day. Did I mention the wind gusts? 70+mph. And the... Sign in to see full entry.

Rumor of coming winds

According to the weather page here on this pc, tomorrow looks dreary and damp. According to that on Charlie's phone, we are to expect winds up to 85 mph. And snow. Well. I guess we'll see. As someone has said, It's like Winter storms off, then comes back into the room saying, "And one more thing...!" Sign in to see full entry.

Whirlwind of this and that!s

Well above freezy today, with gusty wind shaking the trees! Temps are near 60! I don't suppose it is really spring blowing in, but wouldn't that be nice? I think snow is in next week's forecast. The past several days have been a run-around since I realized the hotel I have non-cancellable reservations for requires payment by a single credit/debit card called Union Pay. After days of searching and phone calls to exotic places, I found out that the only way to apply for it is to go in person to a... Sign in to see full entry.

Tuesday? It's Tuesday...?

Feeling better today, and also sorting out trip business. I have posted about the travel immunizations on my travelblogue, but I will just say here, a cheap flight overseas has several accompanying expenses that make it a much less cheap proposition! It is still cold, the high being around freezing today, but tomorrow we expect freezing to 50s F temps. There will be slush... I am staying home off the still-white local streets today, will save drivings-about for tomorrow afternoon. Glad that the... Sign in to see full entry.
