Seriously, Winter...?

Temps down in the 30s overnight... but the garden is still good. There is a big plant sale for charity going on this weekend which I mean to visit. Forecast for the week has us expecting highs in the 60s. But it's Colorado, and it's weather, so who knows? Mama Dove was out and about yesterday, so I took a liberty and a quick feel inside the nest, and yes, the babies are there, two of them, and already a pretty good size. I am so pleased they have enough room to grow now! One of my favorite... Sign in to see full entry.

Wednesday accomplishments

Two days in the 80s, with doors and windows shut snug all winter now open to let in the occasional slight breeze... The gardens were watered before noon, and are perky now in the evening. I am thinking already of dragging out one of the fans to move air through the house. Today we finally got the Chinese paintings up on the wall alongside some of the photos on canvas. It's the first time in months, many months that the wall by the stairs has been wholly switched out. This means I'll actually... Sign in to see full entry.

Tuesday sunshine!

First thing out of bed... well, second thing actually... I was out playing in the gardens. The front deck got watered last night when the pretty orange and yellow blooms in one big pot were drooping, and this morning they are all upright and lovely! It is below where the dove is now nesting--the new nest we set up a while back--so she has a garden to enjoy, if doves do enjoy gardens. On the back deck, the peppers and tomato plants got watered and I finally put some bulbs and corms in soil that... Sign in to see full entry.

This time, no snow on Mother's Day!

My Mother's Day gift is sitting in the front yard. For some time, I have wanted a long little garden box--maybe 8 inches tall, and 6 inches out from the concrete wall of the steps and porch where our front doors are. The base of that structure is about 16 feet long, but we didn't need to fill the whole length. After a nice and tasty brunch we went to the home fixins store and bought a couple of cinder blocks for the ends and a slab of siding, 8 inchs high, 10 feet long for the front. Charlie... it's the Day of the Mothers!

Just as in every male of any age, there is always a little boy--In every female, whatever the age, there is always a mother. Happy Mother's Day! Sign in to see full entry.

Not again!

The white lilac buds are growing pale, ready soon to burst into bloom among the green leaves. Next door the big maple is littering the ground with its tiny yellow blooms, and the leaves are spreading out... Everywhere that green mist of spring is in the treetops... And we are expecting snow tonight. Probably not a lot, probably big, warm flakes that stack high but melt soon as the sun rises. But geeze! It's May, and ought to be full of flowers and warm breezes... Well, we did have the warm... Sign in to see full entry.

Faith and Debate

I realized this past week that I am not interested in engaging in debate, I am not charged up to state my case for the science of climate change, for instance. Stephen Jay Gould once said the same about discussing the evidence for evolution: The science is in, it is established no matter what some people want to believe, and argue. The age of the Earth is likewise a known thing, not up for practical debate. The dynamics of climate, of the interactions of air, sea, and land are complex, seem... Sign in to see full entry.

A long and satisfying day

After a bad night's (lack of) sleep, the day began with getting online to sort some photos of Italy and England. The reason for this sorting was to select a handful to show to the curators at Academy Art and Framing. They'd contacted me over the weekend asking if I had any shots of Europe that they might use in their upcoming gallery of tribute to WWII veterans. AA&F is where I have some of my 'Rubble' collection currently hanging: Only two now, as one has sold! She handed me a check for that... Sign in to see full entry.

Star Fest Sunday

All weekend we have been at Denver's biggest sci-fi/fantasy fan convention. How big is it...? This one's guest celebrities are Nichelle Nichols and William Shatner. There is an art show and silent auction in which Charlie has his post-apocalyptic teddy bears and other art, and I have a few needle-felted planets there, too. Peri Charlifu, my favorite hobbity potter has a great selection displayed, and I have my name on a few pieces. (Peri, by the way, has been invited by the Nebula Awards people... I think it's spring...

Not that we have not had snow in May around here, but just maybe spring has edged out winter now. Outside the kitchen window, there is the green of the lilac leaves spreading open, and the maple in the front is in full flower right now. We have had some 70s+ in the daytime, though today the forecast high is 51F. Wednesday will be in the 70s again despite clouds and maybe some drizzle over the next two days. Sadly, it fared ill, those last very cold days and snows, for the doves. The nest was... Sign in to see full entry.
