What lies behind...?

Behind every great emotion stands another, shyer one. Behind anger, it is usually hurt: betrayal, abandonment, injustice, disappointment. If we are focused on the anger and its complications, it's demands, then we don't have to be so immersed in the the thing that hurt so much we turned to the anesthetizing heat of anger. Anger anesthetizes the pain, while it energizes us to run away from it, or at something else. We can run for leagues, for years to evade the original pain, but there it... Sign in to see full entry.

Ego is not the enemy

I saw a bunch of bumper-stickers and window decals today on the theme of destroying your ego. Several referenced men particularly (Two 1950s looking, smirking women: "Did you see the size of his EGO?") and one of the bunch referenced Zen on the theme of ego destruction. People don't get what 'ego' means, what it is. Ego is your self-image. From a Zen perspective, or the generally Buddhist or Hindu narrative, a self-image is undesireable. From a Western psychological perspective, self-image is... Sign in to see full entry.

I get to wondering...

How does a person lose their connection with humanity? How does someone come to the conclusion that lives are worth less than money? I can understand the kind of aquisitiveness that comes with poverty of all kinds, especially the wherewithal to live in comfort and security, and to give the same to one's children and other dependents. But what of the greed of the already wealthy? How can the Waltons who own Walmart, for instance, rake in the profits and totally disregard the human needs of the... Sign in to see full entry.

Humanity is Love expanding, Greed is Fear, grasping.

It's more evident than ever, the great divide between those who have the grace of real humanity, and those who simply don't. It has always been part of human nature, and I understand that the reason for it lies in the maturity of the human spirit: some younger and more primitive souls are more attuned to the animal side with all it's fears and compensations. It takes a more experienced, more aware soul to attune to our spiritual side, where there is not so much of the personal fear. To fear not... Sign in to see full entry.

Salute to the Sun

Sunrise... pushes against the lightest misty rain off to the west and a rainbow unfolds, to grace the dawning. Sunlight... a shaft of light strikes across the land illuminating treetops; Balloons rise brilliant against a steel-blue lowering sky. Sunset... flaming in the sky reaches towards the rising moon then fades and leaves the sky to the bright and wandering stars. Sign in to see full entry.

Children learn from before birth, by experience as we all do, without explanations or clarifications, without fine-tuned interpretations. The beliefs adopted with that learning is the deepest kind. They also learn as they grow from toddler age on up from lessons taught on an emotional vector from parents, also unquestionable, unexplained and absolute: We don't do that! We do this! That is terrible... disgusting... hateful... This is Good and approved... These lessons also go in and lodge deeply... Sign in to see full entry.

Becoming Whole

Many pages ago, I wrote about core beliefs: the deeply held beliefs by which we are influenced in our lives, our choices and decisions: What we believe to be true about the world, about other people, about our own capabilities and limits. Societies also hold core beliefs that inform the culture of the society. Such beliefs in an individual can be life-enhancing, or so limiting as to make life barely possible. Some beliefs are essentially dysfunctional, some are self-destructive. Most of us are... Sign in to see full entry.

To you... and you... and you... and me...

Like Auden's flashing lights sparking in the darkness that so often seems so overwhelming, we greet each other despite different times and distances between, and know that there is Light always and we are not alone if only we look up and shine. Sign in to see full entry.

Like fireflies, like Auden's "Ironic points of light..."

There are stars whose radiance is visible on Earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for humankind. -Hannah Senesh, poet, playwright, and paratrooper (1921-1944) Go here, to see what Light looks like: Sign in to see full entry.

It used to be said that Man is the animal that uses tools... grieves... laughs... speaks with language... cries... empathizes... is altruistic... None of these proofs of our 'betterness' than other animals, that indeed, raise us above being mere animals, have stood the test of time and observation, the test of reality. Chimpanzees use tools, and so do some birds: not just use, but alter a thing to make it more useable for a specific purpose. All the Great Apes have been taught to use sign...
