I wrote this in response to someone who objected to the term 'non-human' as if it differentiates us human people too much from other kinds of people. She prefers to think of us as 'just another animal' on the planet. Human beings do have attributes that, in combination, have allowed us to dominate life on this planet: hands and minds that can create technological solutions to the problems of living on Earth; intellect that gives us options as we create them, and freedom--when we choose to use... Well, here is another lesson about pedestals and the placing of wobbly humans upon them. It's been tempting to see in this Pope all we could want a Pope to be, he has already said and done so many fine things! And this is me talking, who has never before found any usefulness in Popes. I don't care, can't care that he and I don't agree on everything. If he wants to spend a few minutes with the likes of someone I personally judge as unworthy of his attention, and more than likely to spin such... Sign in to see full entry.
It's fascinating to compare mythologies, that is to say, the stories of gods and goddesses and all their shenanigans that originated to explain how and why things are the way they are in the world--those things called Mysteries! How did we get here, and why? What are we meant to do? Why is there suffering, why is there evil, and how did they come to be? Every culture has asked pretty much the same questions, and often, their answers are maybe not the same, but equivalent. Just the roles are... Sign in to see full entry.
TODDLER’S RULES OF POSSESSION If I like it, it’s mine. If it’s in my hand, it’s mine. If I can take it from you, it’s mine. If I had it a while ago, it’s mine. If it’s mine, it must NEVER appear to be yours in any way. If I’m doing or building something, all the pieces are mine. If it looks just like mine, it’s mine. If I saw it first, it’s mine. If you are playing with something and you put it down, it automatically becomes mine. If it’s broken, it’s yours. (Anonymous) The human race is the sum... Sign in to see full entry.
Being spiritual means being aware of a universe greater than one's personal universe, and realizing one's relationship to it and place in it. The things that ARE, whether designated by our sensibilities as Good or Bad, are all part of the whole. We can't know the whole, but we can know that it exists. Darkness is what we don't yet understand; Karma is what we have not yet learned to love. When we choose to look up at the universe from our human bodies, it is hard to see as real, as more than a... Having pets in our lives, and loves, we learn about letting go, long goodbyes, and learning to live with loss. We also discover or create our own philosophies about death, what we believe it really is and really means. We find a place, if we can, of comfort that is close enough to those truths to satisfy us. Or we fail to find that place, and remain haunted by the inevitable mortality of everyone including, finally our selves. I realized this over the years of many pets, many small deaths, and... The subconscious hears every word, every meaning, and is behind every word choice. So, when we speak, it is useful to listen to our own words and consider why we chose those particular words, and what messages lie quietly among them. Our chosen word reveals us to others, and trains our own inner understandings and beliefs about ourselves. Because we shape our self-esteem and our sense of personal power with the words we use about ourselves, it is useful to make more mindful choices. I try never... Sign in to see full entry.
I hope there will not be clouds in the way... Jupiter and Venus are coming so visually close together this evening, just after sunset that some reports are referring to another Star of Bethlehem conjunction. That's just silly: That was a conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in the constellation Pisces, assigned by the Persian astrologers to the Jewish people. This is Venus and Jupiter coming together in the sign of Cancer. Totally different! Venus, astrolog ically, is the planet of love, passion;... Sign in to see full entry.
I read something today over on Facebook that reminded me to remember. It starts out, Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. I agree and I don't, as it goes on to say, Nothing has changed... I understand how this is a comfort to many who would, without this reassurance, feel devastated by a death, experiencing it as the greatest, most final loss. But I have to go further, because this cannot be quite true. Death is as real as birth. It is a huge... Sign in to see full entry.
I wrote the first part of this as a comment to FormerStudentIntern, sent it over to Facebook where it grew, and now it returns home... A friend of mine turns 30 today. My elder kids are well into their own now, and my youngest is about to reach this mark. I remember my 30s, half a lifetime ago... From here, from now, they look quite different from how they did then. Here is my birthday card to everyone turning 30: The 30s are a great decade, now I look back... It's a time of great energy, high... Sign in to see full entry.
