Tapas by the Singapore River with Asian Mariachi band...

Deelicious bits of this and that--prawns and garlic, chicken in a creamy sauce, scallops on the shell, baked with saffron, calimari, chorizo sausage... It's a sort of all-appetizers cuisine. Marika and two friends downed two pitchers of red sangria. That was dinner out on Clarke Quay last night,... Sign in to see full entry.

Everyday Things in Foreign Places

When traveling, I love to shop for the everyday little items that are different from the ones at home. Then, when I am at home doing the dishes with the sponge from Rome, or writing a note on the notebook from Singapore with the pen from Arab Street, I am reminded how large (and small) the world is!... "With your nose between your knees..."

I am here, after all, to spend time with Marika, and she is doing yoga twice a week these days, and taking a class in belly-dancing. In this hot and humid world, slow stretches seem to me more realistic than gyrations and wiggles, though I know how much fun that can be, too! But, for the record, it... Sign in to see full entry.

Morning Anthem

I have always loved waking to hear the first calls of the first bird of the day. It is especially wonderful here, listening to the melodic song of what my daughter tells me is one of three kinds of mynah birds that are as common as crows and sparrows back home. There is a bird park here, too, that... Sign in to see full entry.

Don't leave the Duck unless you hear these words! If you feel unsafe at any time, feel free to pull down the life-jacket in the netting over your head... The captain's name was Ishmael; the driver's name was Joe. These two looked like products of the same era that produced the Duck itself, the... Sign in to see full entry.

10 hours to Narita, Japan... 7 more to Singapore

bathrooms for hobbits... cheap-carbs loaded food... "jane Eyre" and "Dream Girls" and gloomy classical music... puffy-feet... excellent and courteous personal service on Northwest Airlines starting with hottish, moist towelettes... Window seats over the wing... clear skies over Alaska! A cute little... Sign in to see full entry.

Final packing: What shall I take to amuse myself for 18 hours?

Well, I have a window seat, but over a wing. I will try for a better view, but have not much hope of it. So I will need other amusements... I have a book to read, one that I won't mind discarding when I am finished. I have a soduko thingy that Marika gave me at Christmas, and that should be good for... Sign in to see full entry.

Swimming with dolphins

is high on my Singapore To-Do list. There seems to be a correlation between the state of emotions of the observer and the proximity of whales. I learned this years ago, when I was studying whales and dolphins, a time of much, much angst in my life. In the wild, orcas simply did not come around or... Sign in to see full entry.

What am I going to forget?

What do you forget when you pack for a long trip? What do you not bother to carry because you figure you can get it there? What do you bring anyway, because it is going to be a lot more expensive there? I want to have everything gathered up into luggage before I go to bed tonight, leaving tomorrow...
