How is the Death of Sons and Fathers Considered Victory?

I was flipping through channels early this morning and stopped at a religious program. The minister was in the middle of a prayer, asking for God’s for victory in Iraq. He asked that all of the brave American soldiers be brought home safe and asked again for victory in Iraq over “our enemies”. While I too hope that all American soldiers return home safely, I cannot in good conscious, ask that we be victorious in Iraq. First off, I oppose war, whether it is this war or any other. I have opposed... Sign in to see full entry.

Pope Benedict XVI Spreads Conditional Love, Not Yeshua's Love

Christ said, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment.” He also said, “ And a second is like it, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” Finally, he said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." What is the message here? It... Sign in to see full entry.

Most People Are Other People. Their Thoughts Are Someone Else's Opinions.

It is tragic how few people ever ‘possess their souls’ before they die… Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.. —- Oscar Wilde I came across this particular quote while surfing on the internet during my overnight stay at the Minneapolis airport last night, and it sums up my beliefs about a big portion of the problem with organized religion. Far too many people are “other people” when it comes to Christianity.... Sign in to see full entry.

Are Virtual Worlds Popular Because We Can Play God?

Having survived a killer summer cold that had me laid up for the past few days gave me some time to learn a little more about Second Life (SL). For those of you not acquainted with it, SL is a virtual world that allows one to interact with others via an avatar (an internet representation of one’s self). While I am fascinated with the idea of creating another “world”, another reality really, it dawned on me that SL, and all of the other “virtual worlds” that have been created and populated on the... An Update of the 10 Commandments

This post is from a few years back. I am fighting a killer summer cold right now, and trying to write something fresh is a major struggle right now. Please forgive me for not responding to comments on my last post. I came across this new take on the 10 Commandments at a great website - religioustolerance.org. It was written by someone who prefers to remain anonymous, and I liked them, so I thought I would post them: Respect and worship any deity within your faith tradition, if you follow one.... Sinning is Our Nature. But so is Divinity

Though I do not believe in original sin, I do believe in sin. The original Greek word for sin, hamartano, comes from the field of archery and means to “miss the mark”. In this context, any time one misses the mark with regard to the Divine, one is sinning. Since many of us tend to get caught up in the profane of this world rather then the divine, we are “missing the mark” when it comes to God, so we sin all of the time. But at our core, I believe all people are fundamentally good. I also like... Sign in to see full entry.

The Only Way to Truly Understand the Divine, is to Experience the Divine

"Mysticism, according to its historical and psychological definitions, is the direct intuition or experience of God; and a mystic is a person who has, to a greater or less degree, such a direct experience -- one whose religion and life are centered, not merely on an accepted belief or practice, but on that which the person regards as first hand personal knowledge." This definition of mysticism, from one of the most influential of American Christian mystics Evelyn Underhill, is actually a pretty... Sign in to see full entry.

Christ Has no Body Now on Earth But Yours . . .

Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours, Yours are the eyes through which is to look out Christ's compassion to the world; Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good; Yours are the hands with which he is to bless men now. Teresa of Avila When I read this quote from St. Teresa of Avila, I am again reminded of the problems of the Christian religion in today’s world. Very rarely do we read of those who take her claim to heart. Rather, we read... Sign in to see full entry.

Two Versions of Christianity

I posted this a couple of years ago but it is so well done, I thought I would post it again. If it isn't obvious, I am a firm believer in the Christianity of Love. This is from the Christianmystic.com website, and this particular table was done by Brian Robertson, who runs the site. Christianity of Law Christianity of Love Belief Christianity of Law Christianity of Love Jesus Death on the Cross and Resurrection In payment for sins and won eternal life for believers. His death/ resurrection is a... Sign in to see full entry.

Alone and Atonement. It's All About Oneness.

Being alone. While many dread the time when one is sharing the stage with no other, I search for it. Alone for me is not being alone. Alone for me is being al-one (all one). It’s the time when I strive to reunite with the Divine. It’s the time I work for inclusion, not separation. The same holds true for atonement. While the word means to make amends with God for sins, it holds a different meaning for me. It is again a time for oneness – at-one-ment. It is a time for me to seek reunification...
