Different strokes
Like an artist varying brush strokes, the photographer can also achieve different moods with but one subject. I found a small waterfall that caught my eye. It was in a very deep dark part of the woods and I wondered if it would show up at all. So I set my ISO at 100 and the shutter at 1/15 th second...

Tell the story
I can tell you that my son worked on motorcycles, ATVs and such in our garage when he was in high school rather than flip burgers, but does that sentence really convey the story as well as this photo of him amid his many projects? I can also tell you he liked to ride from an early age and was always...

Who says it has to be digital?
These next two were taken on film. You remember that don’t you? You had to wind the camera between shots, oh don’t forget to set the ASA or you will ruin a whole roll. There was no preview. Serious photographers took notes on shutter speeds, f/stops, subject matter and then studied the results. Of...

Look closer
Sometimes the most interesting photos are the ones you don’t see at first. The other day I was shooting a bunch of abandoned buildings that as a kid, I remembered people renting for the summer or temporary workers lived there as well. They are all mostly fallen down now, but something about “ghost...

Seize the day
Some days are made for photographers. Today was such a day. The fall colors were on display under a bright blue sky punctuated with a few wispy clouds. I have always wanted to go on a photo expedition on such a day and today was elected. One of our fall duties is to close up our lake cabin for the...

Stand and deliver.
Sometimes you have to look around for the best place to get your shot. Recently at a Radio Control Car race, I wanted to get the whole track into the photo, only from the ground level it just didn’t show up right. I could have gone onto the driver’s stand, but that shot would have exceeded my...

Try different angles.
Too many times we take a picture and leave it at that. A good shot, but maybe there is another angle that will give a whole new perspective (pun intended) to your photo. Of course one is not always free to go anywhere one wants, but when the opportunity presents itself, take advantage of it. This...

Bracketing de-mystified.
Bracketing sounds complicated to the amateur photographer, I know, I am one of those. There is a way to have the camera do it automatically, but I didn’t have time to figure that out, so I used the Av feature. You may see that on your display, it is a line that starts at –2, goes to zero then to +2....

Sunsets, my weakness
The way the colors play and dance across the sky, morning or evening has always struck me as one of the most beautiful things one can witness. They are well suited to photographs because how else can you share them. Who ever takes the time to watch a sunset run through its repertoire? Sunsets are...

Just two of my favorites
Sometimes luck is on your side when it comes to capturing a really great picture. Of course as I have said before, having your camera at the ready as much as possible increases your chances of getting a good shot when it presents itself. So it was this fall day when we went to turn off the water at...
