Time and place
The next series of photos I’d like to share illustrate one of the challenges facing photographers, what can I do to make this shot better? This has nothing to do with f-stops, shutter speeds or any of the camera specific details. It has everything to do with composition, time of day, framing and the...

A shot in the dark
Most of us put our cameras away at night, but that is when you can get some really great shots. So, lets up the ante and say we are driving along the freeway at night, well we aren't really driving, our wife is. If you think talking on the cell phone and driving is distracting, then don't ever try...

Photographic thoughts
There are many things to think about when taking photographs. What framing should one use? Is there enough light? Should I use a tripod? And as this series of photos I took just tonight shows, framing can affect exposure. These were taken on the program setting which allowed me to capture the fading...

Create illusions
This is from a few years ago, I had done the house up with lights and wanted a photo. By crouching down in the driveway, I was able to exaggerate the slope of the front lawn. It also eliminated the mountain the the background which was throwing the exposure off. It wasn't totally dark yet which gave...

Even on dreary days...
There are photo ops if you happen to be lucky enough to catch them. As I was driving home the other day, I saw a layering of clouds against the mountians in our valley. I live about a mile up this valley so I had time to get my camera and tripod. This shot became the cover of my Christmas card. The...

Take two (at least)
A picture, it is said, is worth a thousand words, but if you miss the shot, not so much. In the digital age, always take several, you never know which one will be best, or you might get more than one that you like. I just took these two of our gray cat in a twisted pose on the couch. The first one...

Sinking cat
No, the cat really is sinking, in a manner of speaking. She loves it in the sink. I noticed the odd thing that the new bathroom fixtures and such matched her almost perfectly. Now I know where my wife got the inspiration for her choices! I like the low angle shot, the eyes are so expressive.

Your photos are your life.
You may notice that I have not posted a photo here. In this electronic age, most of us have turned to digital photography, a modern marvel indeed. I have learned a hard lesson and that is - back up your photos! Our computer recently had a hard drive go bad. The only thing we lost was every photo I...
