Winter through the lens
Colors seem to disappear. Details seems washed out. Winter is a great opportunity for photographers but it isn't without it's pitfalls, Harry. For the next shot I decided to contrast the blue of our wind steamer with the seeming monochrome landscape. Of course, our old friend, depth of field, popped...

Seasonal themes
I know, some say not to put hats on pets, but you gotta admit Santa Leroy looks the part and he wasn't coerced in any way. Winter is for the birds and I'm sure the birds that live here probably agree with me. There is more snow on the house now, I just need to get a break from shoveling to take the...

Digital road maps...
Look at these photos. What is it? It is the magnetron out of our microwave. Why did I take a photo of it? To have a record that shows what it looks like and the part number printed on it. Now check out these shots. I took the microwave apart and needed a reference to know how to put it back...

Pet photos, fun for all
Photos that purr or bark? Your pets, the animals you know best make good subjects since you know what they are likely to do and what cute poses they strike. These two, the calico the mother and the white one her son, used to sit for hours on our lap blankets. So it was easy to catch them together,...

Fire and ice
Lawn chairs and a fire pit are the stuff a summer evening is made of. But in the winter it offers a stark contrast with snow piled on the chairs, the firewood and everywhere. It always amuses me to take photos of summer settings when covered with fresh snow. These were at the lodge where we went for...

Winter, a time of contrasts
This morning we woke up to eight inches of snow, for once the weather predictions were right. After a round of shoveling, it was time to come in and sit by the fire with the cat. After I warm up I bit, I will look outside and think of the beauty of snow and how it makes me appreciate that fire.

My kingdom for a tripod?
Low light steals photos, or does it? Sometimes one sees a photo that begs to be taken but the problem is, the shot will require a tripod. Such was the case last week. It was dusk and the hills had several slash piles burning. The fires shown brightly and the smoke columns rising from them could be...

Preserving the memories
Family portraits, such a pain in the ass. At my son’s wedding, the photographer caught the family together. It wasn’t really posed and that is what I like about it. I can’t pose. My face freezes and I look like some geezer in an old black and white photo, tintype maybe. So here we are, my oldest...

Shooting the moon
Just how bright is the moon? Here’s a hint and an example. I put my camera on a tripod, aimed it at the moon, full zoom (300mm) and let the auto exposure have its way. The result you see here was shot at 1/8 of a second, F 5.6 with the ISO all the way up to 1600. As you can see, we are way...

If Dali had a digital camera
I first tried this many years ago, but forgot about it until I read about it in a photography magazine. I’m going to let you look at it and think about how you would go about getting this effect. Why you would want to do this is another story altogether. For me, it’s because I can’t paint this even...
