Condoning Statutory Rape
Read this story before you read my article, if you haven't already heard about the middle school that's offering contraceptives to its students. I have a problem with this on a number of levels and for a number of reasons. But the biggest reason that I oppose this middle school's new "program" is...

Note to Ellen: Choices Matter
I’m really tired of the news stories about Ellen Degeneres’s dog. She screwed up and her mistake has caused a world of hurt for a number of innocent people. That’s the long and the short of it, but that makes for a rather short post. So let’s look at the situation. Situation Summary: As I understand...

Today Is Boss's Day
...in America, anyway. I took my bosses to breakfast this morning, and bought one of them (the one who could not make breakfast) a European garden basket. I have really great bosses, and I'm glad to honor them a bit on this day. I wonder, though, about people who happen to have crummy bosses. What...

Wasps and Other Evil Stinging Things
(With thanks to whoever's post it was that I read a few minutes ago and was inspired by...) I seem to be a target for vicious, stinging insects. I don't understand it. Frankly, I try to avoid the nasty, evil creatures whenever I know they are about. I remember being chased by paper wasps when I was...

Blessed Rain!
It has been overcast and rainy in Memphis for the past three days. It's wonderful. We have been in a state of drought for so very, very long. And now we've had nearly a week of off-and-on, gentle, soaking rain. It's very cool today. I could almost believe it was autumn. After several weeks of...

Another Legend Is Dead
Madeline L'Engle is dead at the age of 88. I LOVED Madeline L'Engle. Her books introduced me to the realm of fantasy and science fiction. A Wrinkle in Time, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, The Arm of the Starfish... I grew up with Meg and Charles Wallace, Sandy and Dennys, Polyhymnia, and the...

Luciano Pavarotti e morto.
I cannot believe it. Pavarotti is the first opera singer I ever heard. I fell in love with his amazing voice and the depth of emotion he could convey with the smallest, shortest note. He was amazing. Wonderful. Sort of an icon in my life. Like your parents, your icons are not ever supposed to die....

The Best in the Country? I Dunno ...
Front-page on MSN today is an article purporting to list the ten best donut shops in America. Of course, it has the standard disclaimer about this being the author's opinion based on his experience. But the sub-headline states that the author "scoured the country" looking for the best donuts ever. I...

Rents Are Rising
(Thanks to Success Warrior for the inspiration....) I work in the multifamily housing sector, and one of the things that people don't seem to realize is that when property taxes go up, so does rent. When interest rates rise, rent goes up because the cost of property financing goes up. (And there are...

Their son who was the progenitor of the Bonaparte line in America. Interestingly, Napoleon disapproved of the marriage and ordered his...
