The Etiquette of Accepting a Job
We are desperately short-staffed in an area, and we've been trying to hire someone to fill the empty spot -- a high-traffic admin position -- for more than a month. We actually had chosen two candidates who were great fits, and had hired one. She worked here for a week and then the Office Manager...

Fisher Paykel Appliances ROCK!
I have been lusting after my mother's washer and dryer for nearly ten years, ever since she got a Fisher Paykel set. So when I received an employee award with a $500 prize, and got a nice Christmas bonus on top of it, I decided to use the money to buy myself a Fisher Paykel washer and dryer. Of...

Psych! He Did NOT Resign!
So now the mayor is saying that the letter he sent stating that he planned to retire at the end of July was NOT a resignation letter. Uh. Right. If I give my boss a letter that says, "Jane, I plan to retire from my position on August 1," then Jane is going to start looking for someone to replace me....

More on the Mayor
So the latest news I'm hearing is that, hey, he's only going to resign IF he gets the job of superintendent of schools. Otherwise, he'll stay in. Since WHEN do you get to be elected for one position and then decide that no, you'd rather have this other position, so you are going to tentatively...

Do You Know What Our Mayor Did?
I am SO angry that I HAVE to rant about this, So bear with, and tell me (a) what YOU think of this, and (b) what the electors in the city can do about it. Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton recently ran for his fifth term. He's been mayor here for sixteen years. After a very hotly contested election, he...

Do You Really Think Moses Was Stoned?
Okay, so, my favourite headline for this news story was The Guardian's: "Moses Was Stoned When He Set the Ten Commandments." But the story itself is both amusing and appalling. Whatever happened to the scientific method? To PROOF? Because this Benny Shanon doesn't want to believe in supernatural...

Did They REALLY Starve Him?
There's a news story about a kid who went to Egypt as a foreign exchange student. He came home early, practically a skeleton. Now he's claiming that his host family, members of the Coptic Church, starved him. I suppose it's possible that his hosts were cruel, evil people. I mean, there are such...

Dates for Dollars -- Literally
So there's a guy in Los Angeles who is newly back in the dating game thanks to a divorce. Brave man. I've been divorced for seven years, and I am still not back in the dating game. (Of course, the fact that I have two kids probably has something to do with that. Post for another day.) I'm not sure I...

Give 'Em a Number!
Most career counselors will tell you that you should never, ever answer the question "What are your salary requirements" with a number. While they usually have some good reasoning behind that advice, I've never suffered from breaking it. In fact, the three times I broke the "rule," I ended up with a...
