Just Add Water!

Have you ever received a bouquet of long-stemmed roses? I remember one year I had 3 dozen all the same week. I got a dozen from Jay, a dozen when I won Miss Ottawa (there she is)... Not to be outdone, I received a dozen more from my Ottawa University Mike ( not to be confused with my KU Mike). I remember when the second dozen came, my mother refrigerated them at too LOW a temperature. I remember that it was early June and very hot! I put them in a vase and the heads just drooped over. My mother... Sign in to see full entry.

Are You Single and Miserable

What you do on Valentine's Day depends on whether your sweetie is The One or just-for-fun. Are you single and OK with it? Or are you single and miserable? I thought this category was the the most interesting one listed in today's Kansas City Star. It tells you if you must be miserable, at least try to look cool while you mope. This could have been me a year ago while I was nursing my still aching heart. Hint: stay away from sharp objects on that day. Wear your sweat pants, eat mac and cheese,... Sign in to see full entry.

Sweet Gifts for Your Sweetie

Did you know you could buy a camel, a cow or a sheep for a family in need in a third world country, all in your sweetheart's name? Go to oxfamamerica.org for details. Other suggested gifts are sports fan memorabilia of the cheerleaders or the mascot, autographed personally to your sweetie's name. Attend a classic cinema theatre featuring Bogie and Bergman. Buy him or her some 'spensive athletic shoes that are customizable or get her an underwear membership to Birdies Panties (a new pair every... Sign in to see full entry.

Roses are Red

The KC Star's theme for today was the poetry of love. I think one of the cutest poems was one my grandfather wrote to a girl named Nellie Wells. It went like this: "Roses are red, violets are blue, I'd like to get better acquainted with you." She wrote back: "Roses are red, violets are blue, I'd like to get to know you, too." They did get better acquainted... and at the ripe old age of 15, in the year 1913, my Gma Nellie was wed to Ward W. Ralston. They were married 66 years. Sign in to see full entry.

Gifts Donated in Love

"We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." ~ Winston Churchill ~ The Kansas City Star has a "Share the Love Project" this month. Today the published a list of drop off sites and agencies that will benefit from contributions of new bed sheets, pillows, towels and wash cloths, diapers, blankets, paper products and office supplies or just a cash donation (a check). As we spend billions a month in a foreign country, bombing and rebuilding, and we still have homeless left over... Sign in to see full entry.

Dance Me to the End of Love

If you are looking for a seductive song for your lover, check out Medeleine Peyroux's version of: Dance With Me To The End Of Love lyrics Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove Dance me to the end of love Dance me to the end of love Let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon Show me slowly what I only know the limits of Dance me... Pet Names

How many of you have or have had pet names for your valentine? I asked my husband if we had ever called each other by endearments other than the more traditional ones like sweetheart, or honey? I already knew the answer, but he said, "Noooooo," and acted as if that was the silliest thing he ever heard of. I had a boyfriend that I adored and we called each other "Carolebear" and "Johnnybear", or we'd say, "Hey, baby, whatcha doin?" on the phone. Jay knows I dig this kind of stuff and he's tried,... "Let Me Call You Sweetheart"

When I told my husband, Jay, that he's my sweetheart, he scoffed and asked how he was a "sweetheart?" I explained that it's because his heart IS so sweet. And that he treats us all so sweetly. And he loved me at first sight. And that he didn't give up on me when I flew away; he held the front door open and let me come home. Now that's as sweet a deal as anyone could ever want. He lets me give him chocolate hearts and kisses whenever I feel like it. I call him sweetheart a lot. Try doing this... Sign in to see full entry.

Kiss Me!

"Kiss me once, or kiss me twice, then kiss me once again, it's been a long, long, time." The lyrics to that old tune just popped into my head. Our Kansas City newspaper is dedicating, for each day in the month of February, a section to stories that have something to do with love. Today's theme was, "Do you remember your first kiss?" I had fun reading the different responses. And did that bring back memories!! My first kiss, which turned into very many wonderful kisses, was at age 13 and we were... Sign in to see full entry.

Sisters

This picture was taken in 1999. Sylvia came the first two weeks during the surgeries and Faye came the second two weeks during the programming sessions. They were both here a few days in the transition. They are both nurses. The church ladies provided two weeks of meals so they had time to drive me to the hospital and nurse me through the post-op phase. Sisters A young wife sat on a sofa on a hot humid day, drinking iced tea and visiting with her Mother. As they talked about life, about... Sign in to see full entry.
