The New Math: Do Nursing Homes Make Sense?

2004... Some of you might remember that I wrote a column on this subject in 2004. This a revisit and an update. I knew it was bad, but now I'm pissed. They pay over $100,000 per year in a per person in a nursing home annually. Today I received a copy of Incitement, ADAPT’s newsletter which contained an article listing the disgusting amounts states spend to “care”, note the quotes, for each individual in an instution yearly (according to Kiplinger’s Retirement Report, published March 2004) even... NICK is free!

I have a good news. My advocate buddy Nick Dupree is out of the nursing home and living with his girlfriend in NYC. I'm so thrilled. Sometimes the good guys win. Wait to go Nick! He's been in an institution for a year. i'm so happy for him. He's a strong advocate and I just knew that they weren't going to keep him in there. Anymore then they would keep me (which they wouldn't) Jubilation! Sign in to see full entry.

Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act...

It's the 19th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act today. I go out every year on this day, even if I'm horribly ill. I think it's important to go out and celebrate our freedom and civil rights legislation. The world over disabled people fight for legislation like the ADA and they're winning. Going to the movies and restaurants, school, jobs, politics, what have you is not such a big deal anymore, but before the law passed it used to be. For myself, today, I went to lunch with Robyn... Help Disability Rights Activists Pay their Civil Disobedience Fees!

Dear Friends of Disability Rights Activism: The ADAPT Community has just returned from an intense 4-day action in Washington, DC. ADAPT activists sent a message to the Obama Administration and Congress that people with disabilities and older Americans want long term services and supports, including the reform of the institutional bias in Medicaid and Medicare, to be included in any health care legislation. We thought the Obama Administration and the Democratically controlled Congress would be... Sign in to see full entry.

WTF?

According to ABC News and my friend Rahnee (who posted this to Facebook, where I saw this) Terrified residents at a Corpus Christi, Texas, state school for the mentally disabled were forced to be part of a brutal 'fight club' operated by night shift employees, who made videos of the sessions with their cell phones, the newly released videos show. I always knew institutions were screwed up places to be in, but this is above and beyond my worst nightmare. These poor people. I hope that they're out... Sign in to see full entry.

Update on me

Hi everybody, Sorry I haven't written in awhile. I bruised my knee, and it sent me to bed for a few days. I haven't been out of bed very long since Saturday. How it happened was that on last Sunday (the beginning of my D.C. trip of course) I fell down because I didn't realize the floor was wet. The floor is designed to look like water so you don't always know when water is actually there. My foot slipped and I tumbled landing on my knee. I'm not supposed to do that. Well, no one is but... D.C. solved

I've had a good day. I figured out how to go to D.C. I'm going to stay the three critical nights (Sunday-Tuesday) in the hotel if I can't get a roommate. On Saturday and Wednesday, I will stay in a youth hostle or maybe I will even call the hotel and ask if they have cheaper rooms for those two nights just so I don't have to move my stuff back and forth. The reason I'm paying the ADAPT rate those three nights is because ADAPT needs the money to feed us all week and buy supplies. I'm doing my... Sign in to see full entry.

Fundraiser...

I've decided to participate in a disability rights fun run fundraiser. Please support me by clicking on link. Any amount is appreciated. You will be supporting a radical, disability right direct action group. I've opted to support ADAPT youth leader training program, because Massachusetts doesn't have a regular chapter to speak of. If you can, send me a few cents. Sign in to see full entry.

Theu're Going to Kill Them- an Update on The AIDS doctors

They're going to kill them. The AIDS doctors; I mean. According to the Short, Sharp Science blog posted yesterday. I'm outraged. I'm going to do something. I just don't know what that something is. Any ideas, folks? I'm calling and faxing the government of Iran on Monday. I never did it the first time (sorry to admit, although I told tons of over folks, too and think many did; I was just too ill and sore). However, now I'm better and really going to help stick it to the Iranian government. I... Sign in to see full entry.
